China, following its radical economic reform has developed rapidly in recent decades with nearly double digit annual economic growth rates. China has experienced a major transformation in its transition from centrally planned economy to a developed and relatively well functioning market economy. This has been facilitated through a vision, strategy, planning, management and skilful implementation of such comprehensive reform program. The planning and implementation of the policy of reforming the economy has affected every aspect of life in China. It has implied organisational reforms and changes in production technology. The changes have required enormous amount of resources in various forms particularly in the energy sector, education and different public and private infrastructures. This book provides an up-to-date and in depth analysis of five factors crucial to the success of the policy and current state of the economy. These include: economic growth, bilateral trade relations, science and technology, flow of foreign direct investment and income inequality. They all together provide a comprehensive picture of the recent developments in the Chinese economy and its path of reform. The development has been a great source of admiration around the world.

Energy is one of the most important factors of production. Its efficient use is crucial for ensuring production and environmental quality. Unlike normal goods with supply management, energy is demand managed. Efficient energy use—or energy efficiency—aims to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and services. Energy use efficiency can be achieved in situations such as housing, offices, industrial production, transport and agriculture as well as in public lighting and services. The use of energy can be reduced by using technology that is energy saving. This Special Issue is a collection of research on energy use efficiency.

This book addresses poverty and well-being, equity, and efficiency in selected African countries. The chapters focus on three main topics: studies in the measurement and analysis of well-being and vulnerability to poverty, women's empowerment, and the dynamics and determinants of income and efficiency among smallholders. The chapters in the first section examine poverty, well-being, and vulnerability to poverty, as well as social exclusion, with a focus on households in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Tanzania. They highlight the need to consider multidimensional measures of well-being and vulnerability to poverty, the need to address the distribution of vulnerability across different segments of the population, as well as the importance of developing public policies aimed at poverty reduction and promoting the well-being of the poor. The next section deals with issues related to women’s empowerment, including a multidimensional case study of women’s empowerment in Ghana and women’s access to microfinance services in Ethiopia. This book focuses on the factors that support the strengths of international airlines in general and the Asian airline carriers in particular. Defining the quality of human capital as the level of education and the competence of airline employees, it analyzes the efficiency of 39 airlines in various regions, both in terms of production and cost structures.
