Eine regelmäßige Beobachtung und Bewertung der vielfältigen politischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen in allen afrikanischen Staaten ist angesichts der unzureichenden und verstreuten generellen Berichterstattung selbst für den besonders Interessierten außerordentlich schwierig. Das nunmehr im sechzehnten Jahr für 2002 vorgelegte Afrika Jahrbuch verfolgt das Ziel, allen mit Afrika beschäftigten Personen an einer Stelle einen kompakten und präzisen Überblick über alle wesentlichen Ereignisse eines Kalenderjahres zu ermöglichen. Im Zentrum des Jahrbuches steht die nach einheitlichem Raster erfolgte Darstellung der Entwicklungen im Berichtsjahr in den einzelnen Ländern, in den vier Subregionen des subsaharischen Afrika und in den wichtigsten Regionalorganisationen. Zusätzlich zum Länderteil informiert das Jahrbuch über die deutsch-afrikanischen Beziehungen und analysiert einige herausgehobene aktuelle Themen. Ein Anhang gibt einen Überblick über deutschsprachige Neuerscheinungen sozial- und wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Literatur über Afrika.
