Im Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum (EWR) sind die Mitgliedstaaten der EU und die EFTA-Staaten Island, Liechtenstein und Norwegen zu einem fast 520 Mio. Einwohnende umfassenden Binnenmarkt zusammengeschlossen. Die Bedeutung der engen Zusammenarbeit der EU mit den EFTA-Staaten wurde zuletzt durch den Brexit wieder ins öffentliche Bewusstsein gerückt. Dieser hat gezeigt, dass es Bedarf für alternative Integrationsszenarien zur EU-Mitgliedschaft gibt.
