Researchers in many disciplines have been concerned with modeling textual data in order to account for texts as the primary information unit of written communication. The book “Modelling, Learning and Processing of Text-Technological Data Structures” deals with this challenging information unit. It focuses on theoretical foundations of representing natural language texts as well as on concrete operations of automatic text processing. Following this integrated approach, the present volume includes contributions to a wide range of topics in the context of processing of textual data. This relates to the learning of ontologies from natural language texts, the annotation and automatic parsing of texts as well as the detection and tracking of topics in texts and hypertexts. In this way, the book brings together a wide range of approaches to procedural aspects of text technology as an emerging scientific discipline.

This volume of the series “Translation and Multilingual Natural Language Processing” includes most of the papers presented at the Workshop “Language Technology for a Multilingual Europe”, held at the University of Hamburg on September 27, 2011 in the framework of the conference GSCL 2011 with the topic “Multilingual Resources and Multilingual Applications”, along with several additional contributions. In addition to an overview article on Machine Translation and two contributions on the European initiatives META-NET and Multilingual Web, the volume includes six full research articles. Our intention with this workshop was to bring together various groups concerned with the umbrella topics of multilingualism and language technology, especially multilingual technologies. This encompassed, on the one hand, representatives from research and development in the field of language technologies, and, on the other hand, users from diverse areas such as, among others, industry, administration and funding agencies. The Workshop “Language Technology for a Multilingual Europe” was co-organised by the two GSCL working groups “Text Technology” and “Machine Translation” (http://gscl.info) as well as by META-NET (http://www.meta-net.eu).

Diskurse, die in der nichtlinguistischen Welt über Sprache geführt werden, sind typischerweise Sprachverfallsdiskurse – gleich, ob es um Neue Medien, Anglizismen, Orthographie oder Schülerleistungen geht. Linguistische Laien neigen dazu, Sprache als etwas Homogenes, Monolithisches, das stabilen Normen unterliegt, zu sehen. Variation und Sprachwandel werden, so sie denn zur Kenntnis genommen werden, vielfach als Bedrohung wahrgenommen; häufig werden sie sozial interpretiert. Tatsächlich aber findet die Mehrzahl der Phänomene, die Anlass für sprachkritische Debatten der Öffentlichkeit geben, ihren systematischen Ort im Bereich von Variation oder von Sprachwandelprozessen. Der vorliegende Band versammelt die Vorträge der 49. Jahrestagung des Instituts für Deutsche Sprache; er liefert einerseits eine sprachhistorische und variationslinguistische Einordnung der vom Sprachverfalls-Diskurs betroffenen Systembereiche, andererseits bietet er eine sprachsoziologische Analyse der dem öffentlichen Diskurs zugrundeliegenden Prozesse.
