This volume presents details of 57 coin hoards from Roman Britain, all but two of which were discovered within the last ten years. They include a unique group of 110 plated denarii from northern Suffolk, a rare hoard of 2nd C gold aurei from Didcot Suffolk, and a late 4th C hoard of nearly 7,500 coins from Bishops Cannings, Wiltshire. All the hoards are listed in detail and the catalogues are complemented by pot drawings, discussions where relevant and plates.

Coins were the most deliberate of all symbols of public communal identities, yet the Roman historian will look in vain for any good introduction to, or systematic treatment of, the subject. Sixteen leading international scholars have sought to address this need by producing this authoritative collection of essays, which ranges over the whole Roman world from Britain to Egypt, from 200 BC to AD 300. The subject is approached through surveys of the broad geographical and chronological structure of the evidence, through chapters which focus on ways of expressing identity, and through regional studies which place the numismatic evidence in local context.

The Roman treasure found in 1985 at Snettisham, Norfolk, consists of a collection of silver jewellery, coins, engraved gemstones and scrap silver carefully packed into a small pottery jar and hidden for safe-keeping in the middle of the second century AD. It was evidently part of the stock of a local jeweller's workshop, and as such is so far unique in the Roman world. This catalogue, illustrated throughout, brings together a team of expert contributors from the British Museum and elsewhere to produce an authoritative account of the treasure. The hoard as a whole has proved exceptionally informative, demonstrating the close association between silver- and gold-smiths and gem-engravers and confirming that silver coins were hoarded and used to make jewellery. Although of a modest quality when compared with the many gold ornaments which survive from the period, the range of types found within a single workshop at one point in time provides a new and sounder basis for the close dating of other finds of provincial Roman jewellery.

The Cunetio and Normanby hoards are the two of the largest Roman coin hoards from Britain. They both comprise mostly radiate coins struck in the second half of the 3rd century and are the most important catalogues for people identifying radiate coins in Britain dating from AD 253 to AD 275. The Cunetio hoard was originally published as a single volume, The Cunetio Treasure by EM Besly and RF Bland (British Museum Press, 1983); the Normanby hoard was published along with several other hoards in The Normanby Hoard and other Roman coin hoards: Coin Hoards from Roman Britain VIII edited by RF Bland and AM Burnett (British Museum Press, 1988). This edition provides the two hoards in one volume with a note on more recent work on the radiate coinage of AD 253-96 and notes to aid identification by Sam Moorhead.

Coins of the best-known Roman revolutionary era allow rival pretenders to speak to us directly. After the deaths of Caesar and Cicero (in 44 and 43 BC) hardly one word has been reliably transmitted to us from even the two most powerful opponents of Octavian: Mark Antony and Sextus Pompeius - except through coinage and the occasional inscription. The coins are an antidote to a widespread fault in modern approaches: the idea, from hindsight, that the Roman Republic was doomed, that the rise of Octavian-Augustus to monarchy was inevitable, and that contemporaries might have sensed as much. Ancient works in other genres skilfully encouraged such hindsight. Augustus in the Res Gestae, and Virgil in Georgics and Aeneid, sought to flatten the history of the period, and largely to efface Octavian's defeated rivals. But the latter's coins in precious metal were not easily recovered and suppressed by Authority. They remain for scholars to revalue. In our own age, when public untruthfulness about history is increasingly accepted - or challenged, we may value anew the discipline of searching for other, ancient, voices which ruling discourse has not quite managed to silence. In this book eleven new essays explore the coinage of Rome's competing dynasts. Julius Caesar's coins, and those of his `son' Octavian-Augustus, are studied. But similar and respectful attention is given to the issues of their opponents: Cato the Younger and Q. Metellus Scipio, Mark Antony and Sextus Pompeius, Q. Cornificius and others. A shared aim is to understand mentalities, the forecasts current, in an age of rare insecurity as the superpower of the Mediterranean faced, and slowly recovered from, division and ruin.
