Novel centers around the Pebble Mine Project, a proposed mine that threatens the Bristol Bay salmon fishery – arguably the greatest wild salmon fishery left on the planet. Robert Redford and other enviro VIPs vocally oppose this project. The novel addresses hazards of open-pit mining and includes references to specific mining techniques. Because the information is presented in the context of a love story with fictional characters, the format is more engaging than if it were offered via a scientific publication.
