Paru en 1979 sous le titre " The World of Goods ", pour la première fois disponible en français, cet ouvrage d'une des plus grandes anthropologues du XXe siècle, disparue en 2007, et co-écrit avec un économiste, fonde le champ de l'anthropologie de la consommation par le regard original qu'il pose sur nos conduites de consommation et les échanges marchands. En s'interrogeant sur les motifs qui nous poussent à désirer des objets, à les acquérir, à dépenser ou épargner, et plus largement sur notre rapport à la consommation, il propose une approche résolument inédite de la façon dont les individus et les communautés forgent et projettent des significations, de la valeur, voire une éthique, sur les " biens " de consommation. En ce sens, l'achat apparaît comme une modalité permettant aux individus de déployer des rituels de consommation qui donnent sens tant à ce qu'ils sont qu'à ce qu'ils font. Avec pour fonction essentielle d'établir des systèmes complexes de relations sociales, les biens de consommation répondent à des logiques et des catégories qui dessinent des flux alors représentatifs de la société dans laquelle ils prennent formes. Loin d'être juste une façon de se comporter qui se grefferait à un modèle social existant, l'acte de consommer appelle un modèle de vie enserré dans un ensemble de pratiques fortement socialisées.
