This is an open access book. Review: ICHSSR was established in 2015, and the past five sessions have all been successfully published and indexed by CPCI & CNKI. The purpose of ICHSSR 2015-2024 is to provide a platform for innovative academics and industry experts in the field of Humanities and Social Science Research to collaborate. We achieved our primary objective which is to promote research and development activities in humanities research and social science, while also facilitating scientific information exchange among researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners worldwide. Aims: The 11th International Conference on Humanities and Social Science Research (ICHSSR 2025), scheduled for April 25-27, 2025 in Beijing, China, aims to convene distinguished academics and industry experts from various disciplines within the field of Humanities and Social Science Research. The conference will serve as a platform for comprehensive discussions and studies encompassing EDUCATION, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES, INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES, and other related fields. ICHSSR 2025 also endeavors to provide an avenue for experts, scholars, engineers, technicians, and R&D personnel to exchange scientific research achievements and cutting-edge technologies while gaining insights into academic development trends. Furthermore, it seeks to foster the expansion of research ideas through robust academic discourse and facilitate the industrialization cooperation of scholarly accomplishments. This is an open access book.The 4th International Conference on Literature, Art and Human Development (ICLAHD 2022) was successfully held on October 28th-30th, 2022 in Xi’an, China (virtual conference). ICLAHD 2022 brought together academics and experts in the field of Literature, Art and Human Development research to a common forum, promoting research and developmental activities in related fields as well as scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, and engineers working all around the world.We were honored to have Assoc. Prof. Chew Fong Peng from University of Malaya, Malaysia to serve as our Conference Chair. The conference covered keynote speeches, oral presentations, and online Q&A discussion, attracting over 300 individuals. Firstly, keynote speakers were each allocated 30-45 minutes to hold their speeches. Then in the oral presentations, the excellent papers selected were presented by their authors in sequence.

This is an open access book. The 4th International Conference on Language, Art and Cultural Exchange (ICLACE 2023) will be held on May 19–21, 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Culture includes language, which is a special cultural phenomenon. For culture, most scholars agree that it mainly includes two aspects: material culture and spiritual culture. Specific examples to show cultural phenomena will be of great benefit to our understanding. Some examples of material culture are listed here: Indian women wear saris, Japanese like to eat sashimi, and Chinese like to shake hands when meeting each other. These are various manifestations of material culture in different nations. Language is the mode of transmission of culture. Language is one of the most important ways of thinking and cultural exchange of human beings, which is actually the manifestation of the formation and transmission of culture. Because of thinking, human beings gradually create culture in the continuous social practice, and then spread their national culture to each other in the continuous language exchange. Since ancient times, art and culture have been going hand in hand and complementing each other. On the one hand, art is an important connotation and component of culture, and the progress of art is the driving force of cultural development. On the other hand, culture is the source and content of art, and the prosperity of culture is the key to improve the level of art. Therefore, whether it is culture or art, it is not only a symbol of an era, a representation of people’s life style, but also a guide to the direction of social development. ICLACE 2023 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of Literature, Art and Cultural Exchange research to a common forum. Pain and pleasure are at the heart of human experiences and literary journeys. This book takes the title of Roland Barthes’s text on the pleasure of writing as a starting point for the discussion of other different wor(l)ds and cartographies of pain and pleasure. Set against the Aristotelian delineation of pleasure as the major principle that should govern a literary endeavor, this volume investigates alternative reflections on the themes of pleasure and pain. Thinking about the ways through which expressions of pain and pleasure may affect the writer and the reader as experiences of other pursuits of the human imagination can place or displace, soothe or enrage, and inspire or discourage the individual search for meaning. By engaging with different theories and expressions, it is possible to understand what pain and pleasure have done in the history of humanity, rather than merely looking at them as representations of others’ distant experiences. This volume entails new reflections on the expressions of pain and pleasure to create new meanings for these words in a world vying for expressions of power with and without bliss.

The Poetics and Hermeneutics of Pain and Pleasure

Doris Lessing is a writer for all times; she is a historiographer and a transnational translational mediator between the East and the West. This volume provides a collection of articles analysing Doris Lessing’s literature. The first part, entitled “Lessing’s World of Words”, offers a broad vision of the writer’s novels; it introduces her many genres and sheds light on her literary affiliations. This is followed by “Lessing’s Other Spaces”, which dives into the novelist’s imaginary and spiritual universes. The final part, “Intersections: Lessing and Other Writers” establishes an analogy between Lessing’s texts and Ahlem Mustaghanemi’s Memory in the Flesh, Atiq Rahimi’s Earth and Ashes and Salman Rushdie’s Shame.

Texts act like receptacles for an ever-present remembered past, or what the French philosopher Paul Ricœur calls “the present representation of an absent thing”. They might embody an efficient remedy to forgetting but could also become a vivid testimony for exorcised traumas. This volume focuses on Ricœur’s phenomenology of memory, epistemology of history, and hermeneutics of forgetting. A special emphasis is laid on the dissension between individual and collective institutional memory.

On Trauma and Traumatic Memory focuses on the role of writing to preserve memories, to excavate traumas and to heal the ever-present scars of the past.
