This volume is the original 1647 version of the Westminster Confession of Faith, and its subordinate documents which comprise the Solemn League and Covenant, the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, the Form of Presbyterial Church Government, and the directories for Public and Private Worship. Also is included is the Sum of Saving Knowledge as well as a topical index to all the documents. The Confession and Larger and shorter Catechism are proved by Scripture using the Authorized Version (the King James) as published in 1647 by the Assembly. Some years later, in 1652, the Larger and Shorter Catechism were also published as proved by the KJV version of Scripture. The 1647 Westminster Confession of Faith is the most precise and theologically rich confession produced by the Christian Church. Though the Christian Church takes the whole Word of God alone as her only rule of faith, she must also frame and promote a statement of what she understands the Word of God to teach. Every true Christian longs to be closer in their relationship to Jesus Christ, and obtain a more intimate communion with God. This is the point of this puritan devotional. Herle has taken the role of a preacher, and presented the preaching of the Gospel, particularly the passion and death of Christ, in a devotional manner. What is a devotional? A devotional is akin to the meditative aspects of a sermon (direct application to the self) and how the text launches the reader into their own meditations (how it applies to “me” personally) as directly applied to the soul. Devotionals, like this one, do this step by step, one day at a time. Each chapter is a respective day’s meditation. In this work, there are 41 devotionals on the passion and death of Christ, with a concluding meditation on the resurrection; that Christ is a dying and rising Savior. In addition, Herle thought it important to add into each devotional a kind of ending prayer. Each day there are two or three prayers linked to the devotionals that allow you to become more thoughtful about these important biblical points as they relate to what happened to Jesus, what he did for his people, and how they can be prayed back to him for the soul’s edification and benefit. The goal in this devotional is to meditate and consider the passion of the Lord Jesus (from the Garden of Gethsemane to his death at Golgotha), and then consider what happened on the cross as he is nailed there dying for sinners. These devotionals work themselves out daily. Readers would draw the most virtue from this work, and from Jesus Christ, if they deal with one chapter each day for 41 days. But they are only as helpful as they are thoughtful and dedicated about considering them. Devotionals are not about simply flexing one’s theological muscles each day. It is primarily to gain the real blessing of the Spirit, further conformity to the image of Jesus Christ, and a deeper fellowship with the Father as you come to understand the passion of Christ, and his death on the cross in redeeming sinners.

Mockett’s argument in this work is directed to well-meaning Christians who are defiling the Regulative Principle – that God alone determines the manner and time in which sinners are to approach him. Writing against the, “observation of Christ’s nativity,” Mockett shows the Christian how he is to reject, whole-heartily, adding Christ into Christmas as a religious or worship observance. Mr. Mockett is not going to deal with taking Christ out of Christmas. Instead, he is going to painstakingly demonstrate the ill-use of trying to reclaim Christ for Christmas as an unholy venture. He will show that it is a detestable, sinful practice to put Christ back into Christmas since men have no warrant from God to do so. Though they do this in pretense of honoring Christ in a day of worship, and do so with a sincere heart, as Mockett shows, “Good intentions and well meanings cannot justify any unwarrantable practice.” Mockett’s treatment of this issue is clear and well documented. The student of Scripture and historical theology cannot but come away with believing that reclaiming Christ in Christmas is truly a violation of God’s word, and a sinful practice which has harmed the church throughout its history.

The Christian’s Desire to See God Face to Face

Christ is clearly portrayed in Scripture as the incarnate God-man who came down from heaven to save his people from the apostasy of Adam in the garden. He is the second Adam, the Branch and High Priest of the everlasting covenant (planned before time began), who came to redeem and save wicked sinners through his merit of living a perfect life to uphold God’s Law, and willingly died on a cross to became a curse through death in order to appease God’s wrath for his one and only bride. To use biblical terms, he expiated sin and propitiated the wrath of God, justifying his people, sanctifying them through his heavenly intercession by sending his Spirit to work in them, and will one day glorify them making them perfect to rule and reign with him forever. It is one thing to understand the various historical narratives concerning these truths in the Gospels, but it is another thing altogether to consider how Jesus saw himself in the Gospels. This work investigates Christ’s interpretation of the phrase “Son of Man” as found in the book of Daniel, (7:13) and applied to himself throughout the Gospels. Though the phrase “Son of Man” is seen in various Old Testament books and used for a variety of purposes, Christ’s use is specific in its reference to Daniel and his own description. In this way a question becomes important as it relates to Christ’s self-disclosure, “Do you see Christ as Christ saw himself? Do you see Christ clearly?”

God alone is good, and good to all, but not to all alike. Nathaniel Holmes will take this very sound and important theological idea of God being good, and apply it readily to the people of God. He teaches that God is the Fountain of all rich supplies who is infinite, and can supply all needs infinitely. The conveyance and insurance of this are infallible, as they are found in Christ Jesus. All the supplies that come from God through Christ to those of God’s elect who are in Christ, come enriched with God’s glory shining all over them. He explains that providences below, graces within, heaven above all have a lovely scarlet blush of Christ’s blood upon them, so that rays of divine love shine on those who are in Christ. What a most excellent topic for the Christian to be encouraged and revived by! After Holmes explains that God is in fact good, and a glorious supply of goodness in Jesus Christ, he then deals with Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” He shows from Isaiah the incomparable nature of God’s gracious thoughts toward poor sinners, which are above and beyond their own thoughts, and is sufficient to stop the mouth of all objections and still the cries of all sadness and all miseries. In the third and last section, Holmes then shows God’s gracious expressions engaging himself with those that receive his grace, from 2 Cor. 1:3-4, “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” In this wondrous study of God’s holy word, the reader will be refreshed and encouraged to hold steadfastly to the goodness of God in Christ in all things as the Father of mercies, the God of all comfort, for his glory and the good of his people. God, a Rich Supply of All Good

When you finish reading this practical work by Zachary Crofton on biblical repentance, you might say to yourself, “I’ve never repented.” That’s the kind of impact he is going to have on you if you read this work even in a cursory manner. In order to have a deeper walk with Christ, repentance is at the heart and life of the sinner who walks comfortably with God. However, repenting, reordering and realigning your fallen mind to sit in connection with God’s will, is not as simple as praying a prayer, as some would have you believe. Crofton says that repentance is a “sense of, and sorrow for sin, as committed against God.” The sinner must spread himself before the Law of God to survey the entire course of his own life. He needs to weigh himself in the balance of God’s perfection. The Gospel-sinner knows he is imperfect, and in view of God’s Law, which shows him his sin, he comes away not just lacking in some spiritual and moral goodness, but sees the utter viciousness of his nature against God’s prescription for holiness. He then sentences himself as accursed of God, agreeing that the Law is right and good, and he knows that he is “bound” to experience God’s Divine fury for his sin in hell by God’s justice which is just and good. He not only sees that he is a true sinner before God, but sorrows under his understanding of sin, and is “ashamed of such a sad and sinful state.” He comes to learn that repentance is a supernatural gift given to him from God, and that he must turn from sin and confess his sin. This kind of repentance is necessary to remove the wrath and judgment of God and to “answer the call of the gospel,” which requires everyone to repent. Crofton explains the characteristics of true biblical repentance from 2 Corinthians 7:11. There are eight characteristics that he covers: godly sorrow, care, clearing of ourselves, indignation, fear, vehement desire, zeal and revenge against sin. And, finally, Crofton demonstrates 10 points which show how you, reader, might gain godly repentance, completely soaking the sinful heart in the blood of Jesus, with great speed, and earnestly looking for repentance only at the hands of God. In this work, Jackson lays down biblically the doctrine of eternity, and the importance of man’s never dying soul that hangs in its balance. This being a fundamental point of Christian divinity, it should be “plainly proved, clearly explained, and powerfully applied to us.” He explains what eternity is in the final four basic tenants of Christian doctrine, death, judgment, heaven and hell. He then proves by Scripture the many infallible proofs that all mankind, at the end of this world, shall go in their bodies and souls into an everlasting condition, either of happiness or misery. Then he describes the misery of that everlasting condition of woe and punishment that the wicked shall go into at the end of the world. Afterward, he explains the happiness of the eternal state of glory and rest that the righteous shall go into at the last day; a most excellent and comforting exhortation. Following this, he takes a chapter to explain the principal reasons why all mankind after the day of judgment shall go in their bodies and souls into an everlasting condition, either of happiness or misery. Not only that it "will" happen, but the all important “why” it will happen. In the last chapter he directs the reader how to apply the great doctrine of man’s future eternity, in order to escape everlasting punishment, and obtain eternal life only in Jesus Christ, after this life is ended. This is a blessed treatise, deep in its power and application; a God-glorifying and Christ exalting work by this eminent divine.
