Harlan I. Smith

During the 1920s Harlan I. Smith, an archaeologist with the National Museum of Canada, documented plant and animal knowledge and use among the Gitksan, Nuxalk and Ulkatcho Carrier of British COlumbia. This volume is an edited version of a manuscript by Smith, which contains information on 112 botanical species and their traditional cultural roles among the Gitksan. Prepared between 1925 and 1927, Smith's work is the earliest, relatively comprehensive ethnobotanical study for any Tsimshianic group, the first record of a clearly ethnobotanical investigation undertaken in British Columbia, and the first to include the term "ethnobotany" in its title. This thoroughly revised version of the manuscript also offers additional introductory text, ethnobotanical and linguistic commentary, and concluding remarks not found in the original.

This proto-language dictionary contains over 4,000 entries and an extensive index of English glosses, and was produced from computer programmes that reconstructed the sound systems of four Algonquian languages, from some 30,000 lexical items recorded by Leonard Bloomfield.

For those who know, collect, or use Medalta pottery, this book is a valuable source of information far beyond what has been available to date. It is a fine compliment to museum collections and exhibits and the heritage sites the pottery factories have become. Anne Hayward curated the travelling exhibition Medalta Ware for the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, and developed curatorial and interpretive materials for the Clay Products Interpretive Centre in Medicine Hat.

The Micmac-English section consists of some 7,850 Micmac entries with their English equivalents. There is also a comprehensive English-Micmac index.
