Xenogenesis' is vernoemd naar Octavia E. Butlers beroemde Xenogenesis Trilogy, die bestaat uit Dawn, Adulthood Rites en Imago. Octavia E. Butler was een baanbrekende Afro-Amerikaanse sciencefictionschrijfster. Haar bekroonde romans gaan over thema?s als het uitsterven van de mens, rassenscheiding, planetaire transformatie, afgedwongen mutatie, vervreemding tussen generaties en gewijzigde verwantschap. Butlers ficties van xenogenese, die worden verteld als processen van buitenstaander in wording of het worden van buitenstaander of vreemdeling in wording of het worden van vreemdeling, hebben de gedachtegang van het vroegere en huidige werk van The Otolith Group geïnspireerd en zullen dit blijven inspireren. 00Het meeste recente werk in 'Xenogenesis, O Horizon' (2018), werd door filmcurator Ed Halter uitgeroepen tot de nummer één in zijn ?Best Of 2018?-lijst voor Artforum International: The Year In Review. De documentaire O Horizon gaat over het hedendaagse erfgoed van Visva-Bharati, de experimentele kunstacademie die in 1919 is opgericht door de bekende kunstenaar, dichter, componist, toneel- en romanschrijver Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan in de Indiase deelstaat West-Bengalen. ?O Horizon? is de landbouwkundige term voor de grond die het oppervlak van de aarde vormt. Since they began collaborating in 1993. John Wood and Paul Harrison have accumulated a series of playful and beguiling video works which are distinguished as much by their droll sense of humour as their unerring economy of execution. Played out against a minimalist, monochrome backdrop, or within the sealed-off space of the monitor itself, each of the works involves the presence of one of the artists, either as the butt of an extended sight-gag or as the trigger for a spiralling, visually surprising conceit. This publication, which features an essay by Charles Esche, documents Wood and Harrison's work to date, including single-screen works and installations.
