Unlike other forms of adaptive testing, multistage testing (MST) is highly suitable for testing educational achievement because it can be adapted to educational surveys and student testing. Computerized Multistage Testing: Theory and Applications covers the methodologies, underlying technology, and implementation aspects of this type of test design. The book discusses current scientific perspectives and practical considerations for each step involved in setting up an MST program. It covers the history of MST, test design and implementation for various purposes, item pool development and maintenance, IRT-based and classical test theory-based methodologies for test assembly, routing and scoring, equating, test security, and existing software. It also explores current research, existing operational programs, and innovative future assessments using MST. Intended for psychologists, social scientists, and educational measurement scientists, this volume provides the first unified source of information on the design, psychometrics, implementation, and operational use of MST. The place of Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) in European literature is assured, and his significance for the development of German philosophy widely acknowledged. Here the focus is more specifically upon his poetics: a body of reflections on the nature of poetry and the meaning of the poet's vocation. These are found in poems and letters, in difficult (and often fragmentary) theoretical writings, and -- in the case of the 'Pindar Fragments' -- texts in which the distinction between poetry and theoretical reflection seems to be overcome. Although Hölderlin's poetics is considered from various points of view, the themes that emerge most frequently are Hölderlin's notion of a 'poetic law' or 'poetic logic', and his conception of tragedy and of what might be called the 'anti-tragic'. Also included is a new translation of Hölderlin's 'Notes' on Sophocles, which are here provided with a commentary. Charles Lewis received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Cambridge University. He has taught at Princeton University, and held an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Free University, Berlin.

Facts are and must be the coin of the realm in a democracy, for government "of the people, by the people and for the people," requires and assumes to some extent an informed citizenry. Unfortunately, for citizens in the United States and throughout the world, distinguishing between fact and fiction has always been a formidable challenge, often with real life and death consequences.
