Alla metà del XIV secolo Giovanni Boccaccio immaginò che, per sfuggire alla peste che nel 1348 stava decimando Firenze, sette giovani donne e tre giovani uomini si ritirarono in campagna, ingannando il tempo mangiando, danzando e, soprattutto, raccontandosi storie. Nacque così il Decameron, una raccolta di cento straordinari racconti, uno dei testi fondamentali della nascente letteratura italiana ed europea. Oggi, in un periodo tristemente segnato dall’emergenza pandemica e dall’obbligo del confinamento, abbiamo chiesto a sette scrittrici e tre scrittori dei nostri giorni di prendere il posto dei dieci narratori dell’opera di Boccaccio, scrivendo un racconto che prendesse le mosse, con la massima libertà, dal Decameron. Il risultato è una raccolta bellissima, che gioca con l’originale con passione e ironia, tra fedeltà e tradimenti, con meravigliose invenzioni linguistiche (come il dialetto umbro di Barbara Alberti o l’eccezionale falsificazione dell’italiano trecentesco di Michele Mari) o di trama (Jonathan Bazzi, Chiara Valerio), capovolgendo il senso originale (Chiara Barzini, Ilaria Gaspari), o trasportando il Medioevo ai nostri giorni (Antonella Lattanzi, Michela Marzano), discostandosi dal testo boccaccesco cercando di riprodurne i temi profondi, come fa Jhumpa Lahiri, o rileggendo da vicino l’opera con un misto straordinario di immaginazione e conoscenza filologica, come nel racconto di Stefano Massini che apre la raccolta e, tra riferimenti puntuali e svolte inattese, ripercorre l’intero Decameron. Un grande libro che, sorprendendo ed emozionando il lettore, mostra la modernità, perenne ed eversiva, di uno dei testi più belli e importanti di tutti i tempi.
