The Madolescents has the regional character of a Roddy Doyle novel, the farcical teenage descriptions of Sue Townsend, and the dark humour of "Shallow Grave. Rowena is sixteen and works at a funeral parlour, making up the corpses (she didn't qualify to be a beautician). She's a typically out-of-control teenager, stealing nail polish from the local boutiques and living on a diet of Bailey's and chips. But when her thoughts and exploits become increasingly unusual, she finds herself in group therapy with five other troubled teenagers. For better or for worse, the Madolescents are formed.

Protection comes at a price, and before long Rowena is on the lam again, this time accompanied by chambermaid and newfound friend Texy. The trail leads them to rural Ireland, where Rowena finds work in the nearby 'nunvent' - home of the Blue Spark Sisters - but this is no ordinary convent, and Rowena's arrival sets off a train of bizarre events which throws her already messy life even further into chaos...
