Described by The New York Times art critic Roberta Smith as a precocious art star, German artist (Blinky) Palermo (19431977) has been associated with distinct twentieth-century art practices, from abstraction to Minimalism and Conceptual art. But his diverse body of work in fact defies easy classification. Throughout his brief and influential career leading all the way up to his untimely death at the age of 33Palermo executed paintings, objects, installations, and works on paper that mined various contextual and semantic issues at stake in the construction, exhibition, and reception of works of art, eternally stretching and questioning the boundaries of every medium he touched. This fully illustrated catalogue features new scholarship by Christine Mehring and Christoph Schreier and documents the 2013 exhibition at David Zwirner in New York. It is the first publication to tackle Palermos late work, which is characterized by explorations of the tensions between material and color, surface and depth, and figuration and abstraction focusing in particular on the paper works he produced between 1976 and 1977, the last year of his life. Less a system builder than an analyst working on intuition, writes Schreier in his catalogue essay, Palermo explored surface, shape, and colorthe constituent elements of the imagewith the aim of turning them into actors with a lively and delicately balanced play of forces. The simplicity of the artists vision is beautifully evinced by the catalogues vibrant color plates, which reveal every stroke and each grain of paper shining through from behind the pigment.

This survey of Pertti Kekarainen's photography from 1996 to the present is organized by series, from "Density" to "Tila." Kekarainen, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, is a key figure in the Helsinki School, and his goal is to represent invisible but persistent aspects of reality. He takes an unexpectedly old-fashioned direct route to a contemporary end, avoiding digital manipulation and using only mechanical capabilities of the camera to dot his images with colored spots like those you see after staring into a light. In the final image they appear as shadows and traces left not by the light but by the relationships of the people or objects near them, ghosts of ideas and conversations, akin to the ghosts in early spirit photography. Kekarainen has shown in Paris, Rome, Venice, Madrid and Tokyo, as well as all over Germany and northern Europe, where his work is widely held by museums.

Mitch Epstein

Mitch Epstein (born 1952) is among America's finest contemporary photographers. Two of the most powerful series upon which his reputation rests are Recreation(1973-1988) and American Power(2003), sequences that attempt to make fundamental statements about the U.S. by scrutinizing how its citizens spend their leisure and how its energy industry operates. This publication examines the development of Epstein's work through the example of these two very different series. Recreationexemplifies traditional American street photography in its sometimes ironized depiction of everyday circumstances, where American Powercritiques the energy industry and its interventions in nature in much bolder gestures--cooling towers and oil refineries dominate the picture frame, riding roughshod over all rules of proportion and dwarfing anything in their vicinity. Here, in 80 color images selected from these series, Epstein's development is traced, from major protagonist of the American color photography boom to leading commentator on the state of the nation.
