Many water utilities have only a limited knowledge of the structural condition of their underground assests. In order to maintain optimum serviceability, it is increasingly important that utilities gain a better understanding of the current condition and performance of these buried assets. Regular inspection and condition assessment of pipelines can greatly assist utilities with developing robust and cost-effective operational maintenance programs, which will optimize capital expenditure whilst minimizing risk. The aim of the project was to conduct a state-of-the-art literature review of non-interruptive condition assessment inspection devices for large diameter transmission mains (greater than 12 inches). In addition, an expert panel workshop was to be held to review business needs and drivers, the performance of existing technologies, and future underground asset condition assessment research needs. In the months before his death in 1913, from falling more than 300 metres during an attempt to make the first free solo ascent of the North Ridge of the Mandlkogel, Paul Preuss's public presentations on his climbing adventures filled concert halls in Austria, Italy, and Germany. George Mallory, the famed English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s, is quoted as saying "no one will ever equal Preuss." Reinhold Messner, the first climber to ascend all fourteen 8000 metre peaks, was so impressed by the young Austrian's achievements that he built a mountaineering museum around Preuss's piton hammer, wrote two books (in German) about him and instituted a foundation in Preuss's name. Although he died at only 27 years old, modern climbing may never have developed the ethical, existential core that it has today if not for Preuss's bold style. This project did a thorough review of the potential techniques which could monitor the structural performance of operationally critical mains (those 30" or 760mm in diameter and larger) of potable water distribution systems. The objective was to increase effective pipeline management as it relates to predictive failure. Parameters studied were global, local and environmental monitoring and the technologies studies were continuous, remote and in-pipe sensing. Gathering data from range of different sensors(aircraft, satellites, within and on pipes) proved the most optimal, with the understanding that further study of newer methods is recommended.
