New Perspectives on Plato, Modern and Ancient (Hellenic Studies Series)

The philosophers and scholars of the Hellenistic world laid the foundations upon which the Western tradition based analytical grammar, linguistics, philosophy of language, and other disciplines probing the nature and origin of human communication. Building on the pioneering work of Plato and Aristotle, these thinkers developed a wide range of theories about the nature and origin of language which reflected broader philosophical commitments. In this collection of nine essays, a team of distinguished scholars examines the philosophies of language developed by, among others, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, the Stoics, and Lucretius. They probe the early thinkers' philosophical adequacy and their impact on later theorists. With discussions ranging from the Stoics on the origin of language to the theories of language in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the collection will be of interest to students of philosophy and of language in the classical period and beyond.

The problem of body and soul has a long history that can be traced back to the beginnings of Greek culture. The existential question of what happened to the soul at the moment of death, whether and in what form there is life after death, and of the exact relationship between body and soul was answered in different ways in Greek philosophy, from the early days to Late Antiquity. The contributions in this volume not only do justice to the breadth of the topic, they also cover the entire period from the Pre-Socratics to Late Antiquity. Particular attention is paid to Plato, Aristotle and Hellenistic philosophers, that is the Stoics and the Epicureans.

Seine lebhafte Form, mit Sokrates als Gespr¿sf¿hrer, wie auch sein Thema, der Wettstreit zwischen Lust und Wissen um den Rang als h¿chstes Gut, sollte ihn jedoch auch Nichtfachleuten empfehlen, denn der Dialog endet mit einem f¿r Platon unerwartet gro¿¿gigen Kompromi¿ sowohl das Wissen als auch gewisse Formen der Lust sind unverzichtbare Bestandteile des guten Lebens. Der Weg zu diesem Ergebnis ist langwierig, aber lohnend: er verbindet eine Einf¿hrung in die dialektische Methode mit aufschlu¿eichen Erkl¿ngen zum mathematisch- harmonischen Weltbild des sp¿n Platon.
