Henri Michaux

One of the key works of the poet and artist Henri Michaux (1899-1984) whose original approach intertwines the written word with his visionary paintings and drawings. First published in 1972, this English language translation of Henri Michaux's celebrated book Émergences- Résurgences has been published on the occasion of the exhibition Untitled Passages by Henri Michaux organized by The Drawing Center in New York. Part essay, part poem--by turns lyric, ekphrastic, didactic, gnomic, and comic--it is also one of Michaux's most sustained self-portraits.

"Early in his career, Belgian painter James Ensor (1860-1949) broke away from Impressionism, rejecting its prettiness in favor of an original, highly dramatic style. Incorporating elements of satire, caricature, masquerade, and the grotesque, Ensor was a sharp observer of his social and political milieu and a skilled controversialist. Bridging the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and not easily fitting into one particular movement or group, his drawings are increasingly valued for their innovative subjects and techniques, as well as the strong social criticism at their heart. The Return of the Cadavre Exquis featured over 600 collaborative drawings by contemporary artists from around the world. The culmination of a two-year drawing project, the exhibition was composed of contemporary drawings based on the Surrealist parlor game, Exquisite Corpse, as well as a selection of works by Surrealist practitioners of the game. The exhibition was organized by The Drawing Center and Ingrid Schaffner, who initiated the project with the artists Kim Jones and Leonard Titzer.
