Eamonn Butler

Fondata da Carl Menger a Vienna nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento, la Scuola austriaca di economia (che è detta “austriaca” anche se ormai i suoi maggiori autori vengono da altri Paesi) ha interpretato e continua a interpretare orientamenti quanto mai radicali, spesso alternativi rispetto al mainstream. Come Eamonn Butler evidenzia, l’insieme degli studiosi che si riconoscono in questa tradizione di pensiero condivide alcuni punti fermi: la teoria del valore soggettivo (che riconduce il valore al giudizio che i singoli attori economici esprimono su questo bene o servizio), una visione dinamica del mercato quale processo di scoperta, una forte enfasi sui prezzi emergenti dagli scambi quali veicoli d’informazione, una teoria del ciclo economico che punta il dito sulla manipolazione della moneta e del credito quali fattori destabilizzanti di ogni economia. Più in generale, la Scuola resiste di fronte all’idea di adottare una prospettiva positivista – mutuata dalle scienze naturali – per esaminare il complesso interagire di scelte e opinioni che caratterizza l’universo della produzione e dei commerci. I temi al centro della riflessione degli “austriaci” definiscono una teoria che, nei diversi autori con accenti un poco differenti, delinea una prospettiva assai liberale, che difende l’autonomia della vita economica di fronte alle pretese del potere e alle interferenze di governi e burocrazie. Il volume di Butler illustra in termini assai semplici i vari nuclei concettuali della Scuola austriaca e nella parte finale offre anche qualche elemento essenziale sui suoi maggiori protagonisti: da Menger a Friedrich von Wieser, da Eugen Böhm-Bawerk a Ludwig von Mises, da Friedrich von Hayek a Murray Rothbard, a Israel Kirzner.
