Det er eit faktum at ikkje noko framandspråk har påverka dei nordiske språka så mykje som nedertysk gjorde i den sentrale hansatida. I denne boka er det samla bidrag der nyare synsmåtar er nytta for å belyse påverknaden frå nedertysk. Ein del av artiklane omhandlar generelle tema, som til dømes tilhøvet mellom lingvistikk og språkhistorie. Dei fleste artiklane tar likevel opp meir spesielle tema, som overføring av fraseologi frå nedertysk til nordisk, innverknad frå nedertysk på svensk bibelspråk, tilhøvet mellom nedertysk og slaviske språk og nedertyske spor i norsk setningsstruktur.
