North Korea is dark. Literally dark—most of its regions are too poor to afford electricity and other basic needs. Figuratively dark—its daily life is hidden from outsiders, its citizens reticent, and its propaganda vast. And spiritually dark-its ruler, Kim Jong-il, is both worshipped and feared and the gospel is squelched without question. Into this darkness, Esther walked. Growing up a Chinese-Korean, Esther wanted nothing to do with Christianity until a visit to an underground church in China flooded her with the mercy and power of the Spirit—and she was given an unusual call: be a missionary to North Koreans. But again, Esther wanted nothing to do with it, or rather, with them. Rude, filthy, and abusive, North Koreans seeking refuge in China were the worst of the worst. Und doch gibt es hier heute mindestens 70.000 Christen in Nordkorea. So schätzen Hilfsorganisationen. Das liegt auch an mutigen Christen wie Esther Chang. Die Tochter einer chinesischen Arztfamilie (geboren 1967) beherrscht beide Sprachen: Chinesisch und Koreanisch, da ihre Familie koreanischer Abstammung ist. Nachdem Esther jahrelang täglich ihr Leben riskierte, um nordkoreanische Flüchtlinge zu Hause in China zu verstecken, zu versorgen und ihnen von Jesus Christus zu erzählen, öffnet Gott Türen nach Nordkorea: Als Bevollmächtigte verschiedener chinesischer Firmen bewegt sich Esther legal im Land. Wenn jemand auf der Straße vor Hunger stirbt, kümmert das häufig niemanden. Esther erlebt viele Bekehrungen und Gebetsheilungen. Durch sie entstehen 25 christliche Hausgemeinden. Dann werden Christen verhaftet. Unter Folter verraten sie etwas. Jetzt ist die Geheimpolizei Esther auf der Spur. Sie wird ebenfalls verhaftet und gefoltert. Durch eine Fügung Gottes kommt sie frei und kehrt nach Hause zurück. Dort nimmt sie die Arbeit unter Flüchtlingen sofort wieder auf. Bis zur Verhaftung 2007, diesmal in China. Fünf Wochen muss sie in einem der berüchtigten chinesischen Geheimgefängnisse Folter und Hunger ertragen. Heute lebt sie mit ihrer Familie im Ausland, da ihr Leben in China zu sehr gefährdet ist. Eine sehr spannende, authentische Geschichte.
