We encounter the Egyptian tree goddess Hathor dispensing sustenance in the afterlife; the mighty oak sacred to Zeus; Adam and Eve alongside the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; the Buddha under the bodhi tree of enlightenment; Rembrandt's celebrated etching The Three Trees; and trees in modern art. Profiles of twenty-five trees arranged alphabetically are complemented by a wonderfully diverse selection of images. A sample of the trees featured include Baobab, Birch, Eucalyptus, Olive, Poplar, Oak, and Cocoa. 200 colour illustrations showcase an incredible range of art and artefacts, from Egyptian wall paintings, to ancient Greek vases and jewellery, Indian temple sculptures, Japanese woodcuts, Indonesian shadow puppets, British watercolours and a twenty-first-century tree of life from Mozambique.

An elegant catalog showcasing the illustrations and prints of Nikolai Astrup Astrup is a well-loved Norwegian painter, uniquely able to capture the spirit of his home Published to accompany an exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London from February to May 2016 A pioneering painter and print-maker, Nikolai Astrup (1880-1928) spent his life capturing the landscapes of his home in Western Norway, imbuing his work with mysticism and an enigmatic symbolic content. The first UK exhibition of his work will run at the Dulwich Picture Gallery from February to May 2016. Over 90 oil paintings and prints will explore the breadth and depth of Astrup's unique artistic practice, shining a spotlight on of one of Norway's most renowned artists of the twentieth century. Frances Carey is an independent curator and consultant who was formerly Deputy Keeper of Prints and Drawings and Head of National Programmes at the British Museum. She has published on the history of art and culture from the eighteenth century to the present day. Ian A.C. Dejardin is the Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. He graduated with a Master (Hons) in History of Art from Edinburgh University; appointed Curator at Dulwich in 1997, he became the gallery's Director in 2005 and since then has presided over a varied and international exhibition program. MaryAnne Stevens is an independent art historian and curator who has previously worked at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, as Director of Academic Affairs, before serving as Acting Secretary for three years. She has been published extensively, and curated or co-curated many major international exhibitions, including Manet: Portraying Life and Jean-Etienne Liotard."

The Print in Germany, 1880-1933

A compelling introduction to the life and artistic output of a trailblazing Norwegian painter, printmaker, and horticulturist Nikolai Astrup (1880-1928) was a Norwegian Expressionist artist known for colorful paintings and woodcuts of his native landscape. Astrup received a formal art education in Kristiania (now Oslo), Germany, and Paris, but he later rebelled against certain aspects of his training, such as traditional color theory and conventions of optical perspective. He rejected metropolitan cultural centers in favor of his rural childhood home in western Norway, where he produced a remarkable body of work. This volume brings Astrup's life and work to a North American audience, situating him within the history of Norway and late 19th- and early 20th-century art. Astrup's horticultural innovations on the farmstead where he lived are also explored. The book's beautiful illustrations highlight the intensity of Astrup's palette, the innovative nature of his prints, and the magical realism of his landscapes steeped in ancient folklore and local customs.
