This dramatization of Frederick Grice's novel tells the story of two brothers, Dick and Kit Ullathorne, growing up in a mining village between the wars. Dick wants to be a miner, like his father, but Kit has other ambitions. The playscript offers a variety of roles for actors of both sexes, and the accompanying activity section includes work on accent and dialect, characterization, and the historical background to the play.

When Dick and his brother Kit snuck into the boarded up mine, they didn't know it would start a rumor, but they'd borrowed old Jossie's pickax and he was sure ghosts had taken his tool. Life in the colliery is always serious, but Dick makes the most of it. The 12-year-old leaves school to work underground with the pit ponies, and finally searches for a better life above ground.
