There were these two British writers, one lived in the country, the other in the city. The country writer loved to visit the city and partake of brandy and Greek kebabs in the local hostelry. The city writer liked to visit the country and guzzle ale and barbecued steak under the apple trees. The two writers needed an excuse for these indulgences, and so they invented one, and this excuse was called "collaborating on a story" ... It soon emerged that the story was to be about a legendary tree, which they both vaguely recalled from the tales their grandfathers used to tell them of mystery and myth. Soon they were delving with suppressed excitement into old documents at the British Museum and began to come up with some frightening discoveries. The first of these finds was in studying the original text, in Anglo-Saxon, of the Old English poem "The Dream of the Rood". The marrying of the "tree" (crucifixion cross) and the "thorn" (a runic character) was too elaborately regular to be an accident of metre or alliterative language. Other discoveries followed, and the story gradually surfaced, like a dark secret from its burial mound. The Ragthorn

Long ago, long before the weasel was born, the humans all left Welkin. Now, life for a weasel - under the heavy paw of the vicious stoat rulers - is pretty miserable (unless you happen to be a weasel who likes living in a hovel and toiling all hours for the benefit of the stoats). It's certainly not enough for Sylver. Or his small band of outlaws, both jacks and jills. But slingshotsand darts can only do so much against heavily-armed stoats, and life as an outlaw has a fairly limited future (probably a painful one, too). That's when Sylver decides to find the humans, and bring them back to Welkin! His first step is to find a clue that lies in a place known as Thunder Oak.

Oberon, King of the Fairies, three foot high and of angelic face, and Titania, his beautiful wife, are fed up. Their magnificent Sherwood Forest has been whittled away by urban development; the Earth is no longer the green and fertile land of yesteryear. Now is the time for change, so gathering together his band of merry men, household names such as Puck, Mustardseed and Blossom, Oberon decides to move everyone to the New Forest. Enlisting the help of a rude mechanical, a human car mechanic, they pile onto a bus and head off, Titania at the wheel, Moth navigating by the moon and the stars, by the scent of fern leaves on the wind. On the way they fall in with a group of New Age Travellers and learn how to party; they meet and dance with morris dancers, showing them precisely how it should be done, and Titania falls in love with a baby girl, stealing her when her nanny's head is turned. However, it is not all fun and games. Their progess is stealthily monitored by Titania's deadly rival, Morgan La Fay, who is in sole possession of the New Forest. On their arrival, these two powerful women are forced to fight for supremacy, a battle to the death, before everyone can settle down into some form of peaceful harmony.

A Midsummer's Nightmare

In every mouse's long life, there comes a time when ancestral voices tell him to move on. Pedlar, a yellow-necked mouse, has reached that point. Told to leave the Hedgerow and go on a long journey, the adventurous mouse says his farewells and sets out for a far-distant country knows as The House. Reaching his destination, Pedlar enters a strange new world inhabited by many warring tribes: the Stinkhorns of the cellar, the great Savage Tribe in the kitchen, the library Bookeaters, the Invisibles, the Deathshead and the rebellious 13-K Gang. During his stay, Pedlar witnesses a momentous truce, in which the tribes come together at an Allthing meeting and decide to rid themselves of the greatest pests in The House, the greedy, stupid nudniks - the humans. And so the Great Nudnik Drive is set in motion, a time of considerable anxiety for the nudniks, when clocks strike twenty and inanimate objects seem to have a life of their own. Ranged against the mouse tribes are the nudniks' allies: the two cats, Eyeball the Burmese blue and Spitz the ginger tom; the Headhunter, a barbarian human child; and Little Prince, the Headhunter's cannibalistic pet white mouse. The House becomes a hotbed of riot and discord, until Pedlar finally comes up with a solution. The outcome of this heroic struggle has gone down in the annals of mouse history, a history tens of thousands of days long, and the whole remarkable tale is recorded here, between these pages.

Sylver and his band of weasels take to the high seas in search of the humans who mysteriously deserted the land of Welkin many years ago. On their tail is a very seasick Sheriff Falshed, commanded by the stoat rulers to stop Sylver at any cost. And if that's not bad enough, behind him is a ship crammed to the gunwales with bloodthirsty rats, convinced that Sylver is secretly hunting a pirate's treasure.
