We are pleased to bring you this collection of papers for the Ninth International Conference on Conceptual Structures (ICCS), representing continued excellence in conceptual structures research. We have adopted the title \Broadening the Base," acknowledging the importance of contributions from scholars in many research areas. The rst ICCS meetings focused primarily on Sowa’s conceptual graphs; in recent years, however, the ICCS conference series has intentionally widened its scope to stimulate research across domain boundaries. We hope that this stimulation is further enhanced by ICCS 2001 continuing the long tradition of lively conferences about Conceptual Structures. We wish to express our appreciation to all the authors of submitted papers, to the general chair, to the members of the editorial board and the program committee, and to the additional reviewers for making ICCS 2001 a valuable contribution to the knowledge processing research eld. We would also like to acknowledge the leadership of Guy Mineau and Bernhard Ganter in providing a solid framework for an open and e ective reviewing process. Very special thanks go to the local organizers for making the conference possible and, furthermore, an enjoyable and inspiring event. Conceptual Structures: Broadening the Base

In the last years, research on Web mining has reached maturity and has broadened in scope. Two different but interrelated research threads have emerged, based on the dual nature of the Web: – The Web is a practically in?nite collection of documents: The acquisition and - ploitation of information from these documents asks for intelligent techniques for information categorization, extraction and search, as well as for adaptivity to the interests and background of the organization or person that looks for information. – The Web is a venue for doing business electronically: It is a venue for interaction, information acquisition and service exploitation used by public authorities, n- governmental organizations, communities of interest and private persons. When observed as a venue for the achievement of business goals, a Web presence should be aligned to the objectives of its owner and the requirements of its users. This raises the demand for understandingWeb usage, combining it with other sources of knowledge inside an organization, and deriving lines of action. ThebirthoftheSemanticWebatthebeginningofthedecadeledtoacoercionofthetwo threadsintwoaspects:(i)theextractionofsemanticsfromtheWebtobuildtheSemantic Web;and(ii)theexploitationofthesesemanticstobettersupportinformationacquisition and to enhance the interaction for business and non-business purposes. Semantic Web mining encompasses both aspects from the viewpoint of knowledge discovery.

This book introduces and reviews recent advances in the field in a comprehensive and non-technical way by focusing on the potential of emerging citizen-science and social-computation frameworks, coupled with the latest theoretical and modeling tools developed by physicists, mathematicians, computer and social scientists to analyse, interpret and visualize complex data sets. There is overwhelming evidence that the current organisation of our economies and societies is seriously damaging biological ecosystems and human living conditions in the short term, with potentially catastrophic effects in the long term. The need to re-organise the daily activities with the greatest impact – energy consumption, transport, housing – towards a more efficient and sustainable development model has recently been raised in the public debate on several global, environmental issues. Above all, this requires the mismatch between global, societal and individual needs to be addressed. Recent advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can trigger important transitions at the individual and collective level to achieve this aim. Based on the findings of the collaborative research network EveryAware the following developments among the emerging ICT technologies are discussed in depth in this volume: • Participatory sensing – where ICT development is pushed to the level where it can support informed action at the hyperlocal scale, providing capabilities for environmental monitoring, data aggregation and mining, as well as information presentation and sharing. • Web gaming, social computing and internet-mediated collaboration – where the Web will continue to acquire the status of an infrastructure for social computing, allowing users’ cognitive abilities to be coordinated in online communities, and steering the collective action towards predefined goals. • Collective awareness and decision-making – where the access to both personal and community data, collected by users, processed with suitable analysis tools, and re-presented in an appropriate format by usable communication interfaces leads to a bottom-up development of collective social strategies.

Participatory Sensing, Opinions and Collective Awareness

This book originates from the first European Web Mining Forum, EWMF 2003, held in Cavtat-Dubrovnik, Croatia, in September 2003 in association with ECML/PKDD 2003. The Web Mining Forum initiative is motivated by the insight that knowledge discovery on the Web, from the viewpoint of hyperarchive analysis, and, from the viewpoint of interaction among persons and institutions, are complementary, both for the conventional Web and for the Semantic Web. This book presents an introductory roadmap paper, four invited papers and six workshop papers, which were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. Among the topics addressed are Web usage mining, Web mining for the addition of semantics, semantically enhanced Web filtering, ontologies, wrapper induction, Web personalization, user profiling, user session evaluation, and evolution of Web usage patterns.

Formal concept analysis has been developed as a field of applied mathematics based on the mathematization of concept and concept hierarchy. It thereby allows us to mathematically represent, analyze, and construct conceptual structures. The formal concept analysis approach has been proven successful in a wide range of application fields. This book constitutes a comprehensive and systematic presentation of the state of the art of formal concept analysis and its applications. The first part of the book is devoted to foundational and methodological topics. The contributions in the second part demonstrate how formal concept analysis is successfully used outside of mathematics, in linguistics, text retrieval, association rule mining, data analysis, and economics. The third part presents applications in software engineering.

Conceptual Structures: Common Semantics for Sharing Knowledge

Dieses Buch stellt Methoden der Begrifflichen Wissensverarbeitung vor und präsentiert Anwendungen aus unterschiedlichen Praxisfeldern. Im Methodenteil wird in moderne Techniken der Begrifflichen Datenanalyse und Wissensverarbeitung eingeführt. Die neue Generation des Internets („Web 2.0“ oder „Social Web“) zeichnet sich durch eine sehr freizügige Informationsbereitstellung durch seine Nutzer aus. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben Informatiker und Juristen in enger Interaktion die Chancen und Risiken der neuen Web 2.0-Technologien erkundet und gestaltet. Nach Bestandsaufnahme werden die technischen und rechtlichen Chancen und Risiken bezogen auf typisierte Aufgaben analysiert. Generische Konzepte für die datenschutzgerechte Gestaltung einer Anwendung wie Identitätsmanagement, Vermeidung von Personenbezug, Profilbildung und Verantwortlichkeiten werden erarbeitet. Parallel dazu werden Algorithmen und Verfahren für diese Konzepte vorgestellt: Recommender-Systeme für kooperative Verschlagwortungssysteme sowie Spam-Entdeckungsverfahren für solche Systeme. Sie werden anhand realer Daten evaluiert. Alle Ergebnisse werden anhand des Social Bookmarking-Systems BibSonomy erläutert. Schließlich wird diskutiert, inwieweit Dogmatik und Auslegung des Datenschutzrechts wegen der neuen Problemlagen des Web 2.0 verändert werden müssen und eventuell gesetzgeberische Aktivitäten erforderlich oder ratsam sind.
