Elève d’Heidegger, qu’il fréquenta dans son fameux chalet de Todtnauberg, Anders (1902-1992) livre quelques anecdotes significatives, notamment l’étonnement du philosophe quand il s’aperçut que lui, juif, pouvait faire le poirier plus longtemps que ses autres disciples, tous grands et blonds. Mais ce livre est surtout le récit d’un parcours philosophique et politique, où l’on croise également Brecht et Husserl et qui révèle en France une personnalité comparable à celle de George Orwell par son courage intellectuel et sa lucidité.

" Tout le monde est d'une certaine manière occupé et employé comme travailleur à domicile. Un travailleur à domicile d'un genre pourtant très particulier. Car c'est en consommant la marchandise de masse - c'est-à-dire grâce à ses loisirs - qu'il accomplit sa tâche, qui consiste à se transformer lui-même en homme de masse. Alors que le travailleur à domicile classique fabriquait des produits pour s'assurer un minimum de biens de consommation et de loisirs, celui d'aujourd'hui consomme au cours de ses loisirs un maximum de produits pour, ce faisant, collaborer à la production des hommes de masse. A collection of correspondence between Claude Eatherly, a former air force pilot, and Günther Anders, a German philosopher. Eatherly was the pilot who gave the all-clear for the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima: an action the implications of which he had not known at the time. Returning from the mission and learning of the devastating impact of the atomic bomb Eatherly was unable to calmly accept his role. Though he was treated as a hero in the press, Eatherly was morally distraught over his actions and felt that he could not silently accept the accolades. Over the course of some 71 letters Anders and Eatherly struggled with the problem of taking moral responsibility in a time when ethics were the last thing that most people seemed to want to discuss. Part of what fascinated Anders about Eatherly – and prompted the former to contact the latter – was precisely this way in which Eatherly sought to take responsibility for something which he easily could have ignored as having been a matter of “just following orders.” Burning Conscience is a fascinating and troubling book – not simply because it provides a first-hand account of an oft untold moral story in the aftermath of World War II, but because the matters being discussed by Anders and Eatherly are as important today as they were during the lives of the correspondents.— Lib. Ce livre, plaidoyer passionné, profond et précurseur contre la bombe atomique, comprend trois textes de genre très différent. L'Homme sur le pont - "quelque chose" qui n'a ni tète ni mains mais joue de la musique... - est le journal écrit par Anders lors de sa visite au japon, à Hiroshima, en août 1958. _journal d'une virulence terrible contre la bombe, la guerre, les techniques de destruction modernes. Hors limite reprend les lettres d'Anders au pilote de l'avion d'Hiroshima, Claude Eatherly, devenu une victime de la bombe, interné pour avoir refusé d'être traité en héros, ainsi que les réponses d'Eatherly. Les Discours sur les trois guerres mondiales (1964) anticipent les réflexions récentes sur le rôle "éthique" de la peur, de la "panique", de l'effroi, qu'on trouvera plus tard chez un Hans Jonas. Anders le reconnaît dans l'introduction de 1982, ces pages écrites plus de trente ans auparavant appartiennent à la "préhistoire" de la mouvance antiatomique. Pourtant, comme Jean-Pierre Dupuy le montre avec rigueur dans sa préface, elles restent d'une puissante actualité.

Diese erhellen die persönliche und intellektuelle Beziehung des einstigen Paares und werfen auch Schlaglichter auf Zeitgenossen wie Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno oder Martin Heidegger. Nicht zuletzt dokumentiert der Band die Vertreibung, Flucht und Emigration zweier jüdischer Intellektueller aus Deutschland. "SIND GERETTET WOHNEN 317 WEST 95 = HANNAH": Dieses Telegramm schrieb Hannah Arendt im Mai 1941 aus New York an ihren Ex-Mann in Hollywood. Günther Anders, der bereits 1936 in die USA emigriert war, hatte Arendt und ihre Familie bei der Flucht aus Europa mit Geldsendungen und den notwendigen Einreisepapieren unterstützt. Die Ehe der beiden war 1937 auf dem Postweg zwischen den Kontinenten geschieden worden. Während Arendt bis zu ihrem Tod in New York lebte, kehrte Anders 1950 nach Europa zurück und ließ sich in Wien nieder. Bei allen Unterschieden ihrer philosophischen Themen und Theorien blieb für Arendt und Anders gleichermaßen die Erfahrung des Antisemitismus und der Flucht Hintergrund und Movens ihres Schreibens.

Consists of interviews (some imaginary) previously published in the German and Austrian press, in which Anders discusses contemporary problems. Anders, who left Germany in 1933 and now lives in Vienna, is a pacifist and anti-fascist. Several interviews mention the persistence of antisemitism today. "Das fürchterliche Nur: Imaginäres Interview" (pp. 115-124) expresses his views on the Waldheim affair, condemning Waldheim for his past and for causing antisemitism in the present (e.g. the use of vulgar antisemitic expressions against the World Jewish Congress). However, he also criticizes the intervention of American Jews in Austrian internal affairs.

Claude Eatherly, pilota e meteorologo, era un ragazzo texano di 27 anni quando ordinò lo sgancio della prima bomba atomica della storia, Little Boy, che colpì Hiroshima il 6 agosto 1945. Nonostante la giovane età, non era certo un dilettante: per quella missione vennero scelti i migliori piloti della U.S. Army Air Force, ed Eatherly aveva già dato prova del suo valore militare, abbattendo, nel corso della sua fulminante carriera, più di trenta aerei nemici. Dopo lo sgancio della bomba, tuttavia, lasciò l’esercito e rifiutò qualsiasi riconoscimento al valore da parte degli Stati Uniti. Compì anche maldestre rapine e altri piccoli crimini, con la speranza di trovare sollievo nel biasimo collettivo. Ma ciò non bastò a placare i suoi dilanianti sensi di colpa ed Eatherly venne internato in un ospedale psichiatrico. Fu in questo momento, quattordici anni dopo Hiroshima, che iniziò un carteggio con Günther Anders, il filosofo tedesco autore del capolavoro L’uomo è antiquato. Il risultato è questo libro: un commovente scambio epistolare tra Anders e un’anima persa, in cerca di un’espiazione tanto impossibile quanto necessaria.
