Along the lonely western shores of Iceland, among its vast mountain ranges and its barren lava fields, this sublime collection of short stories blends the desires and efforts of its numerous protagonists, nearly all intent on taking leave of their normal lives in order to pursue their dreams more seriously. A Boston ornithologist speeds through the landscape in a four-by-four chasing Arctic Terns; a schoolboy is relocated to the northernmost town of Siglufjördur to compete in a chess tournament; and a husband packs his wife off to visit her aunt in Sweden. Despite the desolation of their surroundings, the characters encounter strange company: ghostly presences in the early hours, enviable neighbors, and fellow writers with remarkably similar ambitions. Plotting a constellation of singular, glittering images that are rendered nonetheless complete, this magnificent compilation intersects the paths of its characters, who are at once isolated in their individual pursuits and yet connected in the vast realm of dreams.

Un homme vit et peint dans ses caravanes tout près de la Sandá, une rivière glaciaire aux confins de l'Islande. L'été s'achève, les tableaux s'entassent dans l'atelier, les visites sont rares et les nuits, de plus en plus froides et tranquilles. Avec en tête la biographie de Chagall ou les lettres de Van Gogh, l'artiste arpente la forêt, s'oubliant dans le courant du temps passé, que viennent interrompre les apparitions irréelles de la femme à l'imperméable rouge. Une seule chose lui importe : peindre la vérité des arbres qui l'entourent. Dans une langue vêtue de paysages, sensible aux tensions secrètes du silence, Au bord de la Sandá suit l'itinéraire d'une réflexion qui choisit l'au-revoir, laissant derrière "des années de sable, dénudées et balayées par le vent, comme un désert desséché par un hiver sans pluie".

Je lidský život na první pohled plochá, průhledná a uzavřená vodní hladina? Takový je první obraz, který ve svých krátkých textech povídkového souboru představuje islandský autor Gyrðir Elíasson. Samozřejmě ihned zjistíme, že věci se mají jinak. Nehybná realita se vnitřním nebo vnějším vpádem rozruší a rozvíří, změní se vnímání času a prostoru, které se zkracuje či prodlužuje, lidé se zarážejí uprostřed věty a kamení. Vše zůstává nevysvětleno, panuje nejistota ohledně toho, co bylo řečeno, co to znamenalo, a hlavně co zůstalo nesděleno. Věci se bez upozornění stávají něčím jiným, stíny se zabarvují a nevyřčená slova získávají život, z banálního je najednou smrtelně důležité. Lidé bez jakékoli projevené milosti balancují na hraně v očekávání přepadu buď na jednu nebo na druhou stranu. Hladina se však brzy zase uzavře a vše znehybní. Je to však stejný obraz jako na začátku?
