Dieser Band ist -je nach zahlweise - die fiinfte oder siebte (schlieBt man Beitriige zur Bundestagswahl 1969 in der Politischen Vierteljahresschrift 1970 und zur Bundestagswahl 1972 in der Politischen Vierteljahresschrift 1973 ein) wahlsozio­ logische Veroffentlichung, in der sich die Herausgeber und andere Sozialwissen­ schaftler bemiiht haben, die Entwicldung insbesondere der deutschen Wahlsozio­ logie zu fordem und ihre Ergebnisse Offentlichkeit und Wissenschaft zugiingllch zu machenl. Unsere implizite und explizite Priimisse, daB sich in diesen einen Zeit­ raum von mehr als zwanzig Jahren umspannenden Arbeiten wissenschaftlicher Fortschritt nicht zuletzt durch Kontinuitiit und Kumulation dokumentiere, ist vor 2 einiger Zeit massiv und sehr pauschal in Frage gestellt worden * Da wir die Auf­ fassung vertreten, daB dariiber nur der Profession insgesamt ein Urteil zusteht, das in einem fortlaufenden wissenschaftlichen Diskurs zustande kommen und sich auf diese Weise auch immer wieder neu konstituieren moB, gibt es fUr uns keinen An­ laB, uns mit dieser spezifischen Kritik im einzelnen auseinanderzusetzen. Dennoch veranlaBt uns die von Schultze zum Ausdruck gebrachte Perspektive noch einma- wie schon in anderen Vorworten zu Biichem dieser Serie - zu einigen Klarstellun­ gen. Eine theoretisch-analytisch orientierte Sozialwissenschaft, wie wir sie vertreten, kann ihrem prinzipiellen Anspruch und Selbstverstiindnis nach nur generalisierend und international vergleichend orientiert sein.

Der vorliegende Band ist der siebte in der Reihe der von den beiden Herausgebern betreuten Buchpublikationen zu Bundestagswahlen und widmet sich der Bundestagswahl 1994. Die inzwischen selbstverständlich gewordene Kontinuität wahlsoziologischer Datenbasen gestattet auch diesmal zwei Schwerpunktsetzungen. Acht der insgesamt 19 Buchkapitel behandeln in unterschiedlichen konzeptionellen wie methodischen Zugängen das Verhalten bei der Bundestagswahl 1994. Weitere acht Kapitel spannen hingegen den analytischen Bogen zeitlich wie sachlich weiter und widmen sich der längsschnittlichen Analyse des Wahlverhaltens in Deutschland, so z. B. den Fragen, ob die Bedeutung des Kanzlerkandidaten für die Wahlentscheidung tatsächlich zugenommen hat und in welcher Weise sich die Bilder verändert haben, die sich die Bürger von den politischen Parteien machen. Insgesamt vermittelt dieser Band aus dem gegebenen Anlaß der Bundestagswahl 1994 einen Einblick sowohl in die Kontinuitäten als auch in die Öffnung der deutschen Wahlsoziologie für neue Problemstellungen.
