Geschichte der USA

Die siebenbändige Ausgabe enthält alphabetisch nach Bundesstaaten sortiert rund 500 originalsprachige Verfassungstexte, Verfassungszusätze, gescheiterte Verfassungen und Verfassungsentwürfe aus den Vereinigten Staaten. Die Texte wurden auf der Grundlage der mitunter seltenen Originaldrucke der offiziellen Staats- oder Konventsdrucker unter Hinzuziehung der Originalmanuskripte ediert und annotiert. In Band VI werden die Verfassungsdokumente von Rio Grande bis Texas herausgegeben, in Band VII jene von Vermont bis Wisconsin.

Rio Grande – Texas

The seven-volume edition contains 446 constitutional texts, constitutional amendments, failed constitutions and draft constitutions from the United States, all in their original languages and alphabetically ordered by states. The texts, including some rare original versions, have been edited and annotated on the basis of the printed official state documents and conventions, consulting the original manuscripts. The constitutional documents from Vermont to Wisconsin are published in volume VII.

For the first time an index of all the constitutions of the Americas, including federal and member states, from the period 1850 to the present, is now available. All current and historical constitutions including their amendments and draughts of constitutions that never came into force are covered. The constitutional documents for each individual country are arranged chronologically and both a general index and an index of sub-national states are provided.

This print edition of Constitutions of the World from the Late 18th Century to the Middle of the 19th Century is the cost comprehensive collection of its kind, containing constitutional documents from 50 countries around the world from 1776-1849. This unique collection includes approximately 1,000 constitutional documents, human rights declarations and drafts of constitutions collected from archives and libraries from around the world by the German Research Foundation.

Constitutional Documents of the United Kingdom 1782-1835

The book edition of Constitutions of the World from the late 18th Century to the middle of the 19th Century is the most complete and academically thorough collection of its kind. It contains constitutional documents from all over the world, written from 1776 to the end of the year 1849. This collection includes about 1,600 constitutions, amendments, human rights declarations, and draughts of constitutions that never came into force, from this period. These early constitutional documents were collected and examined in archives and libraries all over the world, as part of a project by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). Using the original documents, experts from American and European universities reconstructed the authentic constitution texts for each country, and annotated them in their respective original languages. Each volume contains a short introduction, a main part with the edited constitution documents of a country, comments and an index. The unique value of the complete edition lies in its making all constitutions, from the early phase of modern constitutionalism, accessible in a reliable, authentic text version for the first time. These constitutions were widely scattered until now and, in many cases, unknown. In all, constitutional documents from about 50 countries in Europe and the Americas will be published in volumes for each country. Constitutions of the World from the late 18th Century to the Middle of the 19th Century is a unique and fundamental source edition and an extensive documentation of constitutional history. At the same time, it supplements the microfiche edition Constitutions of the World 1850 to the Present. The editor, Horst Dippel, is Professor of British and North American History at the University of Kassel, Germany.

In the course of the development of modern constitutionalism the biennium of 1848-9 has been continuously underrated. No collection of its constitutions has ever been published, nor any systematic interpretation of them has yet been written in spite of the fact that during the revolutionary upheaval of 1848-9, more than 40 constitutions were, with at least some sort of public legitimacy, drafted in Europe and most of them enacted.The twelve articles assembled in this volume were written to illustrate, with a focus on the organization of legislative and executive powers, some major aspects of this struggle. Besides several German, Italian, and Austro-Hungarian constitutions and those of France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, the constitution of Wisconsin is deliberately included to document the whole range of ideas from nearly unconcealed opposition to major constitutional concessions to the rule of popular sovereignty in a democratic republic and to demonstrate the similarities as well as the differences between European and American constitutional concepts at the time. As a result, the years 1848-9 stand out for some major results that transformed the performance of modern constitutionalism in Europe during the second half of the nineteenth and in the twentieth centuries.
