These two volumes collect thirty-eight selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Fourth European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics (QSCP-IV), held in Marly-le-Roi (France) in April 22-27, 1999. A total of one hundred and fifteen scientists attended the workshop, 99 from Europe and 16 from the rest of the world. They discussed the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop was held in the old town of Marly-le-Roi, which lies to the West of Paris between the historic centres of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Versailles. Participants were housed at the National Youth Institute, where over sixty lectures were given by l- ding members of the scientific community; in addition, over sixty posters were presented in two very animated sessions. We are grateful to the oral speakers and to the poster p- senters for making the workshop such an stimulating experience. The social programme was also memorable – and not just for the closing banquet, which was held at the French Senate House. We are sure that participants will long remember their visit to the 'Musée des Antiquités Nationales': created by Napoleon III at the birthplace of Louis XIV, this museum boasts one of the world finest collections of archeological artifacts. New Trends in Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics

This volume is the first of a set of two which contain the invited lectures given at the international seminar of the same title held at the Centre de Mecanique Ondulatoire Appliquee du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris (France) from October 1983 to May 1985. They are intended to provide a survey of topics of current interest relative to the structure and the dynamics of molecular systems. The papers have been selected on the basis of their relevance to the following four topics: i) molecular conformations and transformations; ii) molecular relaxation and motion; iii) charge, spin and momentum distributions in molecular solids; iv) collective phenomena in condensed matter. The first volume deals f)1ostly with the first two topics, the second volume mostly with the last two. Each volume consists of about fifteen self contained, reference contributions covering recent achievements in active branches of molecular physics and physical chemistry. The first four papers of the present volume deal with theoretical aspects of structure and reactivity problems, with particular attention being paid to topology considerations, which have joined symmetry con siderations as an important tool in approaching chemistry problems. The treatment of nuclear probability density distributions is performed on a model basis for a simple system, even though it has come to the attention of theoreticians through experimental results for complex systems.

These two volumes collect forty-four selected papers from the scientific contributions presented at the Third European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics, held in Granada (Spain), April 19–22, 1998. Ninety-nine scientists from Bulgaria, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Ki- dom, Uruguay and Venezuela attended the workshop, discussing the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop took place at the ‘Los Alixares’ Hotel, where 45 lectures were given by prominent members of the scientific community; in addition, 49 posters were presented in two very animated sessions. The success of this workshop is due, without doubt, to the excellent tradition initiated at the previous workshops, organised by Prof. R. McWeeny in San Miniato, Pisa (Italy), 1996, and by Prof. S. Wilson in Oxford (United Kingdom), 1997. These workshops create occasions for meetings and disc- sions on the current state of the art, emerging methods and applications and new trends in this area of science. The three meetings were sponsored and partially supported by the European Union (EU) in the frame of the Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) chemistry actions.
