New Series, Sheet 30 The Carboniferous rocks lie unconformably on the Silurian, with a general north-west strike. The basement-bed is a red conglomerate of varying thickness, formerly grouped with the Old Red Sandstone. It is succeeded upwards by red shale and sandstones and then limestones, which pass up gradually into the overlying Carboniferous strata.
