Káva sa už od 17. storočia stala významným článkom svetového obchodu a v našom každodennom živote tiež zohráva svoju dôležitú úlohu: dodáva nám energiu a povznáša ducha.

V 16. storočí sa káva stala na Blízkom východe obľúbeným nápojom a rýchlo sa rozšírila do Európy, aj napriek náboženskému a politickému odporu. Nakoniec si našla miesto v spoločnosti. Káva má veľmi silný vplyv na náš životný štýl. V európskych mestách vznikli kaviarničky a kaviarne, kde sa diskutovalo o umení a literatúre, o politike a obchode. Dnes považujeme kaviarne za takú samozrejmosť, ako sú knihy, časopisy, knižnice či obchodné inštitúcie.

Slovo káva je odvodené od arabského „qahwah“ - pomenovanie, čo Arabi pôvodne používali na víno. Zo začiatku sa kávové zrná pôvodne žuvali, kým sa nezistilo, že zrná sa dajú rozdrviť, povariť vo vode, a tak pripraviť výborný nápoj. Nikto nevie, kedy a kde sa po prvý raz káva pila, hoci je známe, že už v 15. storočí v Jemene existovali kávové plantáže. Najstaršie záznamy informujú, že prví kto kávu bili boli sufisti.
Sufisti, moslimskí mystici, zistili, že káva zaháňa spánok a povzbudzuje duševnú aktivitu pri ich duchovných cvičeniach. Pitie kávy sa od nich rozšírilo do mestských centier. Koncom 15. storočia kávu do Mekky a ďalej do všetkých častí islamského sveta priniesli kupci a pútnici. Hoci Sufisti používali kávu len pri svojich obradoch, menej pobožní v nej našli príjemný stimul na konverzáciu – a tak vznikla kaviareň. Stala sa obľúbeným miestom zhromažďovania, lebo poskytovala zábavu, hudbu, tanec a príjemná atmosféru. Káva popíjajúcich nielen vzrušovala, ale vyvolávala aj politické spory a intrigy. Preto sa imámovia a svetskí panovníci čoskoro postavili proti pitiu kávy a pokúšali sa kaviarne zatvoriť, lebo ich považovali za miesta korupcie. Vyhlasovali, že káva patrí medzi nápoje, ktoré islamský zákon zakazuje, aj keď sa o tom Korán nezmieňuje. Výnosy a dekréty boli úspešné len krátky čas, potom sa pitie kávy v kaviarňach obnovilo – až do ďalšieho zákazu. Keďže sa ženy na verejnosti neukazovali, popíjali kávu doma so svojimi spoločníčkami.
Do Európy sa káva dostala z Konstantinopolu v 17. storočí.
