Projekt @OnThisDayShepowstał, gdy Ailsa Holland dostała kalendarz ważnych wydarzeń z historii świata pod tytułem On this day – i doprowadziło ją do szału, że ledwie wspomniano w nim o kobietach. Kiedy dała upust swojej wściekłości przed przyjaciółkami Jo Bell i Tanią Hershman, podzieliły one jej gniew i wszystkie trzy postanowiły, że coś trzeba z tym zrobić. Przez lata publikowały na Twitterze jeden wpis dziennie. Przedstawiały kobiety z całego świata, żyjące w różnych epokach i działające w różnych obszarach. Poświęcony każdej bohaterce tweet pojawiał się w ważny dla niej dzień: pod datą, kiedy zgłosiła patent, wygrała w wyborach, zdobyła złoty medal w którejś z dyscyplin sportowych, została skazana za ohydną zbrodnię... Wpisy autorek regularnie spotykały się z podobnymi reakcjami: „Czemu o niej nie słyszałam?” czy „Ktoś powinien napisać o niej książkę albo sztukę, a nawet nakręcić film!”.
