Hybridness is a topical, if somewhat ambiguous, concept in a research environment where there is increasing acceptance of multiple co-existent research paradigms: artificial intelligence with its emphasis on reasoning with abstract symbols; the connectionist approach, with its exploration of the synergies of many interconnected simple structures; and Nouvelle Robotics, which places a focus on the interplay between systems generating skill or behaviour in complete agents. There is scope for considerable argument about principles, research programmes, the Nature of Things, as well as room for compromise and synthesis. This collection of papers, presented at AISB '95 (the 10th biennial conference on AI and the Simulation of Behaviour) reveals both argument and synthesis.

Hybrid Problems, Hybrid Solutions

This book focuses on a critical issue in the study of physical agents, whether natural or artificial: the quantitative modelling of sensory–motor coordination. Adopting a novel approach, it defines a common scientific framework for both the intelligent systems designed by engineers and those that have evolved naturally. As such it contributes to the widespread adoption of a rigorous quantitative and refutable approach in the scientific study of ‘embodied’ intelligence and cognition. More than 70 years after Norbert Wiener’s famous book Cybernetics: or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine (1948), robotics, AI and life sciences seem to be converging towards a common model of what we can call the ‘science of embodied intelligent/cognitive agents’. This book is interesting for an interdisciplinary community of researchers, technologists and entrepreneurs working at the frontiers of robotics and AI, neuroscience and general life and brain sciences.

Abstract: "Models of emotion are often suggested as a way of providing an evaluation of the current behaviour of an agent. In this work, we investigate whether emotions can actually provide suitable reinforcement signals for a Q-learning system to learn adaptive policies. For this purpose a recurrent network model of emotion consistent with the somatic somatic [sic] marker hypothesis of Damásio was developed. Experimental work was done in a realistic mobile robot simulator in a simple foraging-like task. Experiments revealed that having emotions providing a context evaluation for direct use as a reinforcement signal does not work, but using them as modifiers for learning system parameters could be fruitful."

Which features of a computer game contribute to the player's enjoyment of it? How can we automatically generate interesting and satisfying playing experiences for a given game? These are the two key questions addressed in this dissertation. Player satisfaction in computer games depends on a variety of factors; here the focus is on the contribution of the behaviour and strategy of game opponents in predator/prey games. A quantitative metric of the 'interestingness' of opponent behaviours is defined based on qualitative considerations of what is enjoyable in such games, and a mathematical formulation grounded in observable data is derived. Using this metric, neural-network opponent controllers are evolved for dynamic game environments where limited inter-agent communication is used to drive spatial coordination of opponent teams. Given the complexity of the predator task, cooperative team behaviours are investigated. Initial candidates are generated using off-line learning procedures operating on minimal neural controllers with the aim of maximising opponent performance. These example controllers are then adapted using on-line (i.e. during play) learning techniques to yield opponents that provide games of high interest. The on-line learning methodology is evaluated using two dissimilar predator/prey games with a number of different computer player strategies. It exhibits generality across the two game test-beds and robustness to changes of player, initial opponent controller selected, and complexity of the game field. The interest metric is also evaluated by comparison with human judgement of game satisfaction in an experimental survey. A statistically significant number of players were asked to rank game experiences with a test-bed game using perceived interestingness and their ranking was compared with that of the proposed interest metric. The results show that the interest metric is consistent with human judgement of game satisfaction. Finally, the generality, limitations and potential of the proposed methodology and techniques are discussed, and other factors affecting the player's satisfaction, such as the player's own strategy, are briefly considered. Future directions building on the work described herein are presented and discussed.

New research on the adaptive behavior of natural and synthetic agents. The biannual International Conference on the Simulation of Adaptive Behavior brings together researchers from ethology, psychology, ecology, artificial intelligence, artificial life, robotics, engineering, and related fields to advance the understanding of behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow natural and synthetic agents (animats) to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. The work presented focuses on well-defined models--robotic, computer simulation, and mathematical--that help to characterize and compare various organizational principles or architectures underlying adaptive behavior in both animals and animats. The proceedings of the eighth conference treat such topics as passive and active perception, navigation and mapping, collective and social behavior, and applied adaptive behavior.
