Beyond the Symbol Model: Reflections on the Representational Nature of Language presents arguments on several sides of the contemporary debate over the representational nature of language. Contributors include philosophers, linguists, psychologists, semioticians, and communication theorists from the U. S., Canada, Britain, Northern Ireland, and Israel. The chapters respond to the argument that language can no longer be viewed as a system of signs or symbols, and that a post-semiotic account can be developed from the recognition that language is first and foremost constitutive articulate contact. Nordic Classicism presents the first English-language survey of an important yet short-lived movement in modern architectural history. It was through the Nordic classical movement that Scandinavian architecture first attracted international attention. It was the Nordic Pavilions, rather than Le Corbusier's modernism, which generated most admiration at the 1925 World Fair, and it was the Nordic classical architects – including Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz, and Alvar Aalto – who went on to establish Scandinavia's reputation for modern design. Yet this brief classsical movement was quickly eclipsed by the rise of international modernism, and has often been overlooked in architectural studies. The book explores the lives and works of various key contributors to Nordic classicism – with eleven chapters each focussing on a different architect and on one of the period's outstanding works (including the Stockholm Central Library, the Resurrection Chapel, and the Woodland Cemetery). Famous architects and their works are examined alongside many lesser-known examples, to provide a comprehensive and in-depth account. As we approach the centenary of many of the events to which the book refers, now is a timely opportunity to explore the key themes of the Nordic classical movement, its architects, their buildings and the social and cultural changes to which they were responding.

On December 22, 1853, a new steamship left New York on its maiden voyage. The San Francisco--perhaps the finest ocean-going vessel of its time--had been chartered by the U.S. Government to transport the U.S. Army's Third Artillery Regiment to the Pacific Coast. Two days out, the ship ran into one of the great hurricanes of maritime history. Sails and stacks were blown away, the engine was wrecked and scores of people were washed overboard, as the men frantically worked the pumps to keep afloat. A few days later, cholera broke out. After two weeks adrift, the survivors were rescued by three ships. The nightmare was not over. Two of the vessels, damaged by the storm, were in no position to take on passengers. Provisions ran out. Fighting thirst, starvation, disease and mutiny, survivors barely made it back. Then came the aftermath--accusations, denials, revelations of government ineptitude and negligence, and a cover-up.

This is the first full biography from childhood of the eminent British Architect Sir Herbert Baker. Written with the full cooperation of his family and with access to his archive and private papers, it gives an account of his remarkable life as the leading architect to the British Empire. From London, through the commemoration of the empire's war dead in France, via South Africa and Australia to India, he celebrated the might of an empire that once ruled a quarter of the world. He was an intimate friend of many of most fascinating men of his age, including Cecil Rhodes, Lawrence of Arabia, John Buchan, Jan Smuts and, of course, his fellow architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. After a Victorian architectural apprenticeship in London and on to becoming the most prolific architect of his age in South Africa, he built the new imperial capital of New Delhi in India with Lutyens, before returning to London. These built or rebuilt such landmark buildings as the Bank of England, South Africa House, India House, Rhodes House, and the stands for Lords Cricket Ground, as well as numerous churches and private houses.

The Fixer: The Beginning The Fixer is a series that follows Mark Farmer in a new life. This action-packed story follows Mark as his life as he knows it falls apart and is reborn. Mark, a Special Forces soldier known to his brother soldiers as TK, The Killer, has his world turned upside down while deployed overseas. His fiancée, Katie, is kidnapped, raped, and killed by a serial killer. He comes home to find the police have a few leads but no hard evidence against the guy they believe to be the man that did the crime. In his outrage, Mark tracks the guy down only to find another girl dead. He becomes the man the military trained, TK. The cops are close, and TK has the man down in a field beating him to death. With each prisoner TK kills, his sentence gets longer. All seems to be lost for Mark as he recovers from the latest fight in the prison hospital. Until a State Department guy walks in and offers Mark a new life. This mystery man, Troy Place, offers Mark a new job as a fixer. Mark refuses life as an assassin at first, but Troy quickly explains the job is much more than just that. The job is protecting America from its worst enemies, the untouchable ones. The twist with Mark’s missions is that they need to look like anything but an assassination. They can’t look anything like an American-sponsored hit. Mark leaves prison that day with a new career and freedom. He soon finds that his job will not be dull. The world is full of people that hate America and want to hurt its people and its way of life. His first mission sends him to Libya to track and kill a guy financing terrorists seeking to destroy Washington, DC. What seems to be a simple task soon turns to chaos. The series jumps from one crazy mission to the other. Each book putting Mark (TK) into dangerous situations and almost impossible missions. Mark proves himself cunning and valuable each time. Every mission has two objectives, kill the enemy and make it look like something else. It takes every bit of Mark’s training and imagination to do the job well.
