The Devils (The Hereford Plays)

Aldous Huxley's acclaimed and gripping account of one of the strangest occurrences in history. In 1643 an entire convent in the small French village of Loudun was apparently possessed by the devil. After a sensational and celebrated trial, the convent's charismatic priest Urban Grandier, accused of spiritually and sexually seducing the nuns in his charge; was convicted of being in league with Satan. Then he was burned at the stake for witchcraft.

On this baldly terrible foundation, Whiting has built a powerful, complex play, interweaving the personal dilemmas of Jeanne and Grandier with the political necessities of the time. The Gates of Summer is a comedy set in and about a country house in Greece immediately before the First World War. The Devils was commissioned by Sir Peter Hall and produced at the Aldwych in 1961 with Dorothy Tutin and Diana Rigg. Marching Song and A Walk in the Desert were both adapted for television.
