The toxicological monographs in this volume summarize the safety data on a number of food additives: asparaginase from Aspergillus niger expressed in A. niger, calcium lignosulfonate (40-65), ethyl lauroyl arginate, paprika extract, phospholipase C expressed in Pichia pastoris, phytosterols, phytostanols and their esters, polydimethylsiloxane and steviol glycosides. A monograph on the assessment of dietary exposure to sulfites is also included. Monographs on 10 groups of related flavoring agents evaluated by the Procedure for the Safety Evaluation of Flavouring Agents are also included. This volume also contains a monograph on incorporating the single portion exposure technique (SPET) into the Procedure for the Safety Evaluation of Flavouring Agents in the dietary exposure assessment of flavoring agents. This volume and others in the WHO Food Additives Series contain information that is useful to those who produce and use food additives and veterinary drugs and those involved with controlling contaminants in food, government and food regulatory officers, industrial testing laboratories, toxicological laboratories and universities.

Residues of some veterinary drugs in animals and foods

This document contains monographs on residue evaluations of certain veterinary drugs, prepared at the seventy-eight meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), which was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 to 14 November 2013. Four substances were evaluated for the first time--emamectin benzoate, gentian violet, lasalocid sodium and zilpaterol hydrochloride. Four additional substances were re-evaluated--derquantel, ivermectin, monepantel and recombinant bovine somatotrophins. The monographs provide information on chemical identity and properties of the compounds, pharmacokinetics and metabolism, residue depletion studies and analytical methods validated and used for the detection and quantification of the compounds. In addition, this document provides an overview of the pilot project to evaluate alternative approaches to estimate daily intakes of residues of veterinary drugs in foods and provides guidance on the extrapolation of MRLs to minor species and for the establishment of MRLs in honey. This publication and other documents produced by JECFA contain information that is useful to all those who work with or are involved with recommending or controlling maximum residue limits for veterinary drugs in foods of animal origin.

Four substances were evaluated for the first time for the animal species concerned -- amoxicillin, apramycin, derquantel and monepantel. Three subtances were reassessed, monensin, narasin and triclabendzole. The monographs in this volume summarize data on the veterinary drug residues that were evaluated toxicologically by the Committee, which included three antimicrobial agents (cefuroxime, flumequine and pirlimycin), two insecticides (cyhalothrin, and cypermethrin and alpha-cypermethrin) and one production aid (ractopamine). The Committee also evaluated the safety of low levels of the antimicrobial agent chloramphenicol in animal products. This volume and others in the WHO Food Additives Series contain information that is useful to those who produce and use food additives and veterinary drugs and those involved with controlling contaminants in food, government and food regulatory officers, industrial testing laboratories, toxicological laboratories, and universities.

Toxicological Evaluation of Certain Veterinary Drug Residues in Food

This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the safety of various food additives, including flavoring agents with a view to recommending acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and to preparing specifications for identity and purity. The Committee also evaluated the risk posed by two food contaminants with the aim of advising on risk management options for the purpose of public health protection. Annexed to the report are tables summarizing the Committee's recommendations for intakes and toxicological evaluations of the food additives and contaminants considered.

Evaluation of Certain Food Additives and Contaminants

This volume contains monographs prepared at the fifty-sixth meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Five mycotoxins or groups of mycotoxins that contaminate food commodities were evaluated at the meeting: aflatoxin M1, fumonisins B1, B2, and B3, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol, and T -2 and HT -2 toxins. The monographs in this volume summarize the data that were reviewed on these contaminants, including information on metabolism and toxicity, epidemiology, analytical methods for their measurement in food commodities, sampling protocols, effects of processing, levels and patterns of contamination of food commodities, food consumption, and prevention and control. Based upon this information the Committee assessed the risks associated with intake of these mycotoxins.

Monographs Prepared by the Thirty-Fourth Meeting of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, Geneva, 30 January-8 February 1989

This report represents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the safety of various food additives and a food contaminant with a view to concluding as to safety concerns and to preparing specifications for identity and purity. The first part of the report contains a general discussion of the principles governing the toxicological evaluation of and assessment of dietary exposure to food additives. A summary follows of the Committee's evaluations of technical toxicological and dietary exposure data for seven food additives (advantame; glucoamylase from Trichoderma reesei expressed in Trichoderma reesei; glycerol ester of gum rosin; glycerol ester of tall oil rosin; glycerol ester of wood rosin; nisin; and octenyl succinic acid modified gum arabic) and an assessment of dietary exposure to cadmium from cocoa and cocoa products. Specifications for the following food additives were revised: annatto extracts (solvent-extracted bixin and solvent-extracted norbixin); Benzoe tonkinensis; food additives containing aluminium and/or silicon; mineral oil (medium viscosity); modified starches; paprika extract; phosphates (analytical methods for the determination of phosphorus and revision of specifications); 3-phytase from Aspergillus niger expressed in Aspergillus niger; potassium aluminium silicate; and potassium aluminium silicate-based pearlescent pigments. Annexed to the report are tables summarizing the Committee's recommendations for dietary exposures to and toxicological evaluations of the food additives and contaminant considered.
