Under date of April 15, 1993, the Pontifical Biblical Commission published in French a document on the interpretation and use of the Bible in the Church. The English translation of the original French document, "The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church", appeared on November 18, 1993. The purpose of the document is "to indicate the paths most appropriate for arriving at an interpretation of the Bible as faithful as possible to its character both human and divine". The English translation of the document is published in its entirety in the present volume, together with a clarificatory commentary by Fr. Joseph A. Fitzmyer, S.J., a member of the Biblical Commission. A detailed bibliography is included. Also published are English translations of the address of His Holiness Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the publication of the French original on April 15, 1993, and of the preface to the document by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, President of the Biblical Commission.

This is the third, revised edition of the standard commentary on the Genesis Apocryphon by the author. The first edition appeared in 1966, and the second in 1971. The third edition, which is about 80 pages longer, has integrated new textual findings, in particular two columns of the text previously considered to be too fragmentary for inclusion. The commentary also evaluates recent scholarly discussion on virtually every part of the text. This edition, like the previous two, also presents an updated reference grammar of the Aramaic of the Genesis Apocryphon and a complete glossary. In this respect the book can also serve as a solid introduction to the study of the Aramaic of Qumran.

The role that Mary plays in God's plan of salvation is an issue that over the centuies has divided Christians and their churches. In part, these differences stem from disagreements about what the New Testament says about the mother of Jesus. This book should go a long way toward solving the disputes.
