A book about numbers sounds rather dull. This one is not. Instead it is a lively story about one thread of mathematics-the concept of "number" told by eight authors and organized into a historical narrative that leads the reader from ancient Egypt to the late twentieth century. It is a story that begins with some of the simplest ideas of mathematics and ends with some of the most complex. It is a story that mathematicians, both amateur and professional, ought to know. Why write about numbers? Mathematicians have always found it diffi cult to develop broad perspective about their subject. While we each view our specialty as having roots in the past, and sometimes having connec tions to other specialties in the present, we seldom see the panorama of mathematical development over thousands of years. Numbers attempts to give that broad perspective, from hieroglyphs to K-theory, from Dedekind cuts to nonstandard analysis.

Galois modules over local and global fields form the main subject of this monograph, which can serve both as a textbook for students, and as a reference book for the working mathematician, on cohomological topics in number theory. The first part provides necessary algebraic background: profinite groups and their cohomology, duality groups, free products, modules over complete group rings and their homotopy theory. The arithmetic part deals with Galois groups of local and global fields: local Tate duality, the structure of the absolute Galois group of a local field, extensions of global fields with restricted ramification, cohomology of the idèle and the idèle class groups, Poitou-Tate duality for finitely generated Galois modules, the Hasse principle, the theorem of Grunwald-Wang, Leopoldt's conjecture, Riemann's existence theorem for number fields, embedding problems, the theorems of Iwasawa and of Safarevic on solvable groups as Galois groups over global fields, Iwasawa theory of local and global number fields, and the characterization of number fields by their absolute Galois groups.

Cohomology of Number Fields

This second edition is a corrected and extended version of the first. It is a textbook for students, as well as a reference book for the working mathematician, on cohomological topics in number theory. In all it is a virtually complete treatment of a vast array of central topics in algebraic number theory. New material is introduced here on duality theorems for unramified and tamely ramified extensions as well as a careful analysis of 2-extensions of real number fields.

This introduction to algebraic number theory discusses the classical concepts from the viewpoint of Arakelov theory. The treatment of class theory is particularly rich in illustrating complements, offering hints for further study, and providing concrete examples. It is the most up-to-date, systematic, and theoretically comprehensive textbook on algebraic number field theory available.

Algebraic Number Theory

The present manuscript is an improved edition of a text that first appeared under the same title in Bonner Mathematische Schriften, no.26, and originated from a series of lectures given by the author in 1965/66 in Wolfgang Krull's seminar in Bonn. Its main goal is to provide the reader, acquainted with the basics of algebraic number theory, a quick and immediate access to class field theory. This script consists of three parts, the first of which discusses the cohomology of finite groups. The second part discusses local class field theory, and the third part concerns the class field theory of finite algebraic number fields.
