The human body in scientific and artistic representations Around 1800 anatomy as a discipline rose to scientific prominence as it undergirded the Paris-centred clinical revolution in medicine. Although classical anatomy gradually lost ground in the following centuries in favor of new disciplines based on microscopic analysis, general anatomy nevertheless remained pivotal in the teaching of medicine. Corpses, anatomical preparations, models, and drawings were used more intensively than ever before. Moreover, anatomy received new forms of public visibility. Through public exhibitions and lectures in museums and fairgrounds, anatomy became part of general education and secured a place in popular imagination. As such, the anatomical body developed into a production site for racial, gender, and class identities. Both within the medical and the public sphere, art and science continued to be closely intertwined in anatomical representations of the body. Bodies Beyond Borders analyzes the notion of circulation in anatomy. Following anatomy through different locations and cultural domains permits a deeper understanding of its history and its changing place in society. The essays in this collection focus on a wide variety of circulating ideas and objects, ranging from models and body parts to illustrations and texts. Together, the essays enable rethinking the relations between metropolis and colony, university and fairground, and scientific and artistic representations of the human body. Het verhaal van de Belgische en de Nederlandse omgang met het positivisme kent grote parallellen. Toch getuigde de intellectuele cultuur in beide landen van eigen gevoeligheden, vergelijkbaar met de uiteenlopende ontwikkeling van het positivisme in Frankrijk en in Engeland. Toen Nietzsche, de legendarische grondlegger van het positivisme, Auguste Comte, in 1889 omschreef als een schrandere jezuïet die via de omweg van de wetenschap de Fransen naar Rome had willen leiden, gaf hij een rake typering van het negentiende-eeuwse positivisme. De wetenschap vormde voor het positivisme immers geen doel, maar een weg waarlangs een groots maatschappelijk, moreel en zelfs religieus project kon worden waargemaakt. Dat veelvormige project charmeerde ook Belgische en Nederlandse intellectuelen. Ook buiten het universitaire milieu, in vrijdenkers- en vrijmetselaarskringen en in politieke middens bleek het positivisme eveneens voorwerp van debat en controverse, waarbij gediscussieerd werd over materialisme, atheïsme of sciëntisme. In De omweg van de wetenschap schetst Kaat Wils een nieuw beeld van het negentiende-eeuwse positivisme en de receptie ervan in België en Nederland. Haar vergelijkende studie naar het Nederlandse en Belgische intellectuele klimaat laat zien hoezeer deze van elkaar verschilden.

De omweg van de wetenschap

Het onderscheid tussen man en vrouw lijkt een natuurlijk en onveranderlijk gegeven, dat zijn oorsprong vindt in de fundamenteel verschillende bouw van hun lichamen. Hun haast onvergelijkbare lichaamskenmerken doemen mannen en vrouwen niet alleen tot sterk verschillende seksuele gedragingen, maar zadelen hen ook op met tegengestelde ambities, verwachtingen en wereldvisies. En toch zijn er tijden geweest waarin de grens tussen het mannen- en het vrouwenlichaam niet zo eenduidig te trekken viel. Tijden waarin de vrouwelijke geslachtsorganen naar binnen gekeerde versies van hun mannelijke tegenhangers waren, hermafrodieten als een derde sekse werden beschouwd en menstruerende of melkgevende mannen tot de mogelijkheden behoorden. Pas vanaf de zeventiende eeuw werden.

Asceticism, so it is argued in this volume, is a modern category. The ubiquitous cult of the body, of fitness and diet equally evokes the ongoing success of ascetic practices and beliefs. Nostalgic memories of hardship and discipline in the army, youth movements or boarding schools remain as present as the fashionable irritation with the presumed modern-day laziness. In the very texture of contemporary culture, age-old asceticism proves to be remarkably alive. Old ascetic forms were remoulded to serve modern desires for personal authenticity, an authenticity that disconnected asceticism in the course of the nineteenth century from two traditions that had underpinned it since classical antiquity: the public, republican austerity of antiquity and the private, religious asceticism of Christianity. Exploring various aspects such as the history of the body, of aesthetics, science, and social thought in several European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium), the authors show that modern asceticism remains a deeply ambivalent category. Apart from self-realisation, classical and religious examples continue to haunt the ascetic mind.
