Haunted Tales

Have you ever wondered what a writer’s childhood was like? Well, wonder no longer. These stories are about my childhood. I began writing when I was twenty-one in the year 1971 and have since seen not only the world change dramatically but the publishing world as well. When I published my first novel, a horror yarn titled Evil Stalks the Night in 1984 with Leisure mass market paperbacks, I was a loyal worker bee of the big publishing houses with a stingy boiler contract and a whopping 4 percent of the royalties…now thirty-two years later I am self-publishing and am finally making a living at my craft for the first time in forty-five years of writing; with 24 novels, 2 novellas and many short stories to my name. Three of the four short stories in this collection were the VERY FIRST stories I ever had published and they were printed in my local newspaper between 1977 and 1979 after the one titled Michael, a tale about my youngest brother who was murdered in 1971, won their short story contest over two hundred other submissions. I illustrated all the stories for the newspaper then and have included those original drawings in this book. The fourth short story was just recently written and is a composite of some of my childhood Christmases. All four are loosely based on my childhood in the 1950’s and 1960’s. After my musician/singer/songwriter brother Jim passed away last year from cancer I felt the intense need to revive these old stories and memories and put them out there for all to read as a tribute to him and my family. These are my stories, my childhood and some of my fondest memories.

Memories of My Childhood

This sixth Spookie Town Murder Mystery belongs primarily to Abigail and Frank Lester, my two main characters in the six book series. It’s their turn. First off, it at long last solves the enigma of Abigail’s first husband Joel Sutton’s disappearance, and death, a decade before…the tragic event that sent Abigail to Spookie in the first place to begin a new life. The new life that would grow so big as to include a new love, a new family, quirky, but well-meaning friends, and the strange murder mysteries her new friends would drag her into over the years. As an unsolicited, and unwanted, envelope arrives from Abigail’s now dead detective she’d hired a decade before to find her missing first husband, its contents sends Frank searching for the truth. The envelope’s files are full of disturbing facts concerning the unsolved crime and it piques Frank’s interest. Soon, against Abby’s wishes, he’s on the cold trail of what actually happened to Joel Sutton–had he been a victim of just an accident, as some have always believed, or did someone murder him? In his search for the truth, Frank ends up in lethal danger when the investigation comes to a violent conclusion. This story is also about an infamous haunted house at 707 Suncrest, in the woods; about the cold blooded murders of a whole family that occurred there forty years before. Is the house on Suncrest truly haunted by the ghosts of the dead family? Is it dangerous? When Abby decides to paint a series of canvases of the spooky old house, she’ll find out. Then along with those two new mysteries to unravel, of course, all of Spookie’s quirky town characters have returned to irritate, amuse and sleuth with Abby and Frank. Will they get out of these new mysteries alive, too? Perhaps.

All Those Who Came Before

Where the sixth Spookie Town Murder Mystery was more Abby’s and Frank’s stories, their mysteries to deal with, solve and remain alive through; this seventh book is old Myrtle’s story. Two mysteries, one from her far distant past of over seventy-years ago; and one for the future, a dire prediction (only a prediction as I didn't want to venture into the actual time of the pandemic because we are living through it and that has been difficult enough) of a pandemic from her grandniece, Glinda, the psychic, that will affect not only Spookie and its inhabitants, but the whole world. Mysterious bones are unearthed in the ground behind Luke’s Hardware Store, and Frank and the sheriff are determined to find out whose bones they are, and how the victim died…even though whatever happened occurred over seventy years ago. This seventh novel also revisits some of Spookie’s best loved characters and catches the readers up on what they’ve been up to recently. Then again, the town and its people are still as eccentric and quirky as ever, and the fog is always witness to their shenanigans.
