Pour la première fois, des chercheurs du monde entier se sont réunis pour donner au lecteur une connaissance aussi exacte que possible du Tibet. Symbole en Occident d'une prestigieuse tradition spirituelle « orientale », ce pays est aussi, depuis la « libération pacifique » chinoise dans les années 1950, l'objet de polémiques, de propagande et contre-propagande entre Chinois, Tibétains en exil, Tibétains du Tibet et Occidentaux. Tout en reconnaissant dans son titre, Le Tibet est-il chinois ?, l'enjeu essentiel de ces affrontements, cet ouvrage ne cède à aucun parti pris et recherche seulement l'objectivité. En 1988 paraissait un pamphlet chinois intitulé Le Tibet, cent questions et réponses. Ce document de propagande (Editions Beijing Information), extrêmement caricatural, affirmait présenter le résultat des recherches des tibétologues chinois sur les points controversés de l'histoire tibétaine et de la politique chinoise au Tibet. Les éditrices de cette encyclopédie condensée sur le Tibet, Anne-Marie Blondeau et Katia Buffetrille, ont conservé le plan du pamphlet et ont placé en regard des réponses des savants chinois celles des savants occidentaux pour chacun des thèmes traités. L'éventail est vaste, de l'histoire à l'éducation, de la médecine à la démographie en passant par les émeutes, la folklorisation de la culture tibétaine, etc., et les écarts souvent très grands... La forme interrogative du titre est une invitation à la réflexion, à partir de connaissances rassemblées sans passion et dont la divulgation s'imposait dans les circonstances présentes. Le lecteur pourra enfin juger sur pièces de ce que fut le Tibet, de ce qu'il est devenu et de ce qu'il pourra devenir.
