Surfactants play a critical role in Tribology controlling friction, wear, and lubricant properties such as emulsification, demulsification, bioresistance, oxidation resistance, rust prevention and corrosion resistance. This is a critical topic for new materials and devices particularly those built at the nanoscale. This newest volume will address tribological properties of cutting fluids, lubricant performance related to steel surfaces, biolubricants, and novel materials and ways to reduce friction and wear. Scientists from industrial research and development (R&D) organizations and academic research teams in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America will participate in the work.

This and its companion Volume 2 comprise the proceedings of the International Symposium on "Solution Behavior of Surfactants - Theoretical and Applied Aspects" organized under the auspices of the 11th Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical SociƯ ety held in Potsdam, N.Y., June 30-July 3, 1980. This Symposium reƯ presented the third event in the series of symposia dealing with the topic of surfactants in solution. The first Symposium was held in Albany, N.Y., in 1976 under the title "Micellization, SolubiliƯ zation and Microemulsions", 1 the proceedings of which have been docƯ umented in a two-volume set " The second was held under the title "~olution Chemistry of Surfactants" in 1978 in Knoxville, TN, an~ the proceedings of this event have also been properly chronicled " Apropos, the fourth biennial Symposium in, this series is entitled "International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution" (K.L. Mittal and B. Lindman, Cochairmen) and is scheduled to be held from June 27 to July 2, 1982 in Lund, Sweden. Since these biennial events have been very successful and important in bringing researchers with varied interests together and in stimulating interdisciplinary communication, so the plans are to continue these on a regular basis with a change in venue for each meeting.

This work comprises the proceedings of the Fourth Symposium on Particles on Surfaces. This volume chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Adhesion Aspects of Polymeric Coatings held under the auspices of the Electrochemical Society in Minneapolis, MN, May 10-15, 1981. This event was cosponsored by the Dielectric and Insulation, and Electrothermics and Metallurgy Divisions. Polymeric coatings are used for a number of purposes, e. g. , decorative, protective, functional (as dielectrics or insulators) and a special application of polymeric (organic) coatings is their use as lithographic materials for making integrated circuit elements. Irrespective of the purpose of the coating, it must adhere well to the underlying substrate. So the need to under stand the factors which influence adhesion of organic coatings and the ways to attain desired adhesion is quite manifest. This Symposium was designed to bring together scientists and technologists interested in the adhesion aspects of polymeric coatings, to provide a forum for discussion of latest findings, and to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas. The technical program contained a total of 46 papers by authors from various corners of the world. The program comprised both invited overviews and contributed original research papers, as this blend is the best way to present the state of knowledge of a topic. The invited speakers were selected so as to represent widely differ ing disciplines and interests and they hailed from various aca demic and industrial research laboratories.

This volume chronicles the proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution (SIS) held in Gainesville, FL, June 10-15, 1990. This series of symposia have been smoothly running since 1976, but the appellation "Surfactants in Solution" was used for the first time in 1982 in Lund. Since then our logo "SIS" has become very familiar to everyone involved in surfactants. In Lund the meeting was billed as the Fourth International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution. Earlier three events were held under different rubrics, but proceedings of all these symposia, except the 7th SIS held in Ottawa in 1988, have been properly documented. As a matter of fact so far 10 volumes have appeared under the title "Surfactants in Solution". 1,2,3 The program for the 9th SIS was very comprehensive and many ramifications of surfactants were covered, and it was a veritable international event. It contained a total of 384 papers by 869 authors from practically every corner of our planet. Just the sheer number of papers is a testimonial to the high tempo of research and tremendous interest in this wonderful class of materials. As in the past, there were plenary lectures (5), invited talks (37), oral presentations (195) and poster presentations (147). The plenary lectures were given by Prof. J. Th. G. Overbeek, Prof. C. A. Bunton, Prof. H. Ti Tien and Dr. J. Swalen. The lecture by Prof. Overbeek, the doyen of surface and colloid science, was a real treat.

Volume 11

The premier symposium on Surfactants in Tribology, held in Seoul in 2006, was an enormously successful event that generated a high level of interest in the topic, leading to the publication of the first volume in this series in 2008. This volume chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Metallized Plastics: Fundamental and Applied Aspects held under the auspices of the Dielectrics and Insulation Division of the Electrochemical Society in Chicago, October 10-12, 1988. This was the premier symposium on this topic and if the comments from the attendees are any barometer of the success of a symposium then it was a grand success. Concomitantly, it has been decided to hold it on a regular basis (at intervals of 18 months) and the second event in this series is planned as a part of the Electrochemical Society meeting in Montreal, Canada, May 6-10, 1990. Metallized plastics find a legion of applications ranging from mundane to very sophisticated. A complete catalog of the various technological applications of metallized plastics will be prohibitively long, so here some eclectic examples should suffice to show why there is such high tempo of R&D activity in the arena of metallized plastics, and all signals indicate that this high tempo will continue unabated. For example, polymeric films are metallized for packaging (food and other products) purposes, and the applications of metallized plastics in the automotive industry are quite obvious. In the field of microelectronics and computer technology, insulators are metallized for interconnection and other functional purposes. Also plastics are metallized to provide electromagnetic shielding.

This and its companion Volumes 2 and 3 document the proceed- ings of the 4th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution held in Lund, Sweden, June 27-July 2, 1982. This biennial event was christened as the 4th Symposium as this was a continuation of ear- li er conferences dealing with surfactants held in 1976 (Albany) under the title "Micellization, Solubilization, and Microemulsions"; in 1978 (Knoxville) under the title "Solution Chemistry of Surfac- tants"; and in 1980 (Potsdam) where it was dubbed as "Solution Be- bavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects: ' The Pl02 3 ceedings of all these symposia have been properly chronicled. ', The Lund Symposium was bi lIed as "Surfactants in Solution" as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were covered, and furthermore we were interested in a general title which could be used for future conferences in this series. As these biennial events bave become a weIl recognized forum for bringing together researchers with varied interests in the arena of surfactants, so it is amply vindicated to continue these, and the next meeting is planned for July 9-13, 1984 in Bordeaux, France under the cochair- manship of K. L. Mittal and P. Bothorel. The venue for 1986 is still open, although India, inter alia, is a good possibility. Apropos, we would be delighted to entertain suggestions regarding where and when these biennial symposia should be held in the future and you may direct your response to Kk .

The first symposium on this topic was held in Chicago, October 10-12, 1988 and the proceedings of l which have been chronicled in a hard-bound volume l As pointed out in the Preface to the proceedings of the first symposium the metallized plastics find scores of applications ranging from very mundane to very sophisticated. Even a cursory look at the literature will convince that this field has sprouted; and there is every reason to believe that with all the research and development activities taking place, new and exciting applications of metallized plastics will emerge. The program for the second symposium was very comprehensive as it included 46 papers covering many aspects of metallized plastics. This symposium was a testimonial to the brisk research activity and keen interest in the topic of metallized plastics. The success of this symposium reinforced our earlier belief that there was a definite need to hold symposia on this topic on a regular basis. Concomitantly, the third symposium in this vein was held in Phoenix, Arizona, October 13-18, 1991 and the fourth is planned for May 16-21, 1993 in Honolulu, Hawaii. As regards the present volume, it contains a total of 35 papers covering a variety of topics ranging from very fundamental to very applied.

This and its companion volumes 7,8, and 9 document the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution (SIS) held in New Delhi, India, August 18-22, 1986 under the joint auspices of the Indian Society for Surface Science and Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. As this symposium was a landmark -- it represented the tenth anniversary of this series of symposia -- so it is very apropos to reflect on how these symposia have evolved to their present size and status. The pedigree of this series of symposia goes back to 1976 when the premier symposium in this series was held. Actually in 1976 it was a modest start and it was not possible at that time to gaze at the crystal ball and predict what would be the state of affairs in 1986. For historical purposes, it should be recorded here that the first symposium was held in Albany, NY, under the title "Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions"; the second symposium was christened "Solution Chemistry of Surfactants" and was held in Knoxville, TN, in 1978; the venue for the third symposium in 1980 was Potsdam, NY, and it was dubbed "International Symposium on Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects.

This volume and its companion Volume 1 chronicle the proceed ings of the International Symposium on Micellization, Solubiliza tion, and tficroemulsions held under the auspices of the Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Albany, New York, August 8-11, 1976. The technical program consisted of 48 papers by 91 authors from twelve countries. The program was divided into six sessions, and Dr. Hartley delivered the Concluding Remarks. Subsequently, six more papers were contributed for the proceedings volumes with the result that these volumes contain Sl papers (three papers are not included for certain reasons) and are divided into seven parts. The first three parts are embodied in Volume I and the remaining four parts constitute Volume 2; each part is followed by a Discussion Section. Dr. Hartley's Concluding Remarks are in cluded in both volumes. When the idea of arranging a symposium on micelles was broached to me, I accepted it without an iota of hesitation. I had two op tions: either to make it a one- or two-sessions symposium, or bring together the global community actively carrying out research in this area. I opted for the latter as the subject was very timely and I knew that it would elicit very enthusiastic response. In order to broaden the scope of the symposium, I suggested that the theme of the symposium should be Micellizationy Solubilization and Microemulsions.

Micellization, Solubilization, and Microemulsions

This volume documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Particles on Surfaces: Detection, Adhesion and Removal held as part of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Fine Particle Society in Santa Clara, California, July 20-25, 1988. The premier symposium on this topic was l organized in 1986 and has been properly chronicled . Based on the success of these two events and the high interest evinced by the technical community, we plan to regularly hold symposia on this topic on a biennial basis and the next one is slated for August 20-24, 1990 in San Diego, California. l As pointed out in the Preface to the first volume , the topic of particles on surfaces is of paramount importance in legion of technological areas. Particularly in the semiconductor device fabrication area, all signals indicate that the understanding of the behavior of particles on surfaces and their removal will attain heightened importance in the times to come. As the device dimensions are shrinking at an accelerated pace, so the benign particles of today will become the killer defects in the not too distant future. The tempo of research and development activity in the field of particles on surfaces is very high, and better and novel ways are continuously being devised to remove smaller and smaller particles.
