Over 200 residents of a village in north eastern Italy emigrated to Perth between 1900 and 1997.Related are stories of visits home to Italy. Their stories have the themes of homesickness, farewells and reunions. Explores the sense of homelessness experienced and looks at the relationships between immigrants and their homelands and between place and identity. Concludes that visits home are central to the identity of immigrants and their children. Appendices provide migration charts, genealogies, and data on visits. This is the first book to capture the poignant stories of transnational African families and their use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in mediating their experiences of migration and caring across distance. Transnational Families in Africa analyses the highs and lows of family separation as a result of migration in three contexts: migration within South Africa from rural to urban areas; migration from other African countries into South Africa; and middle-class South Africans emigrating to non-African countries. The book foregrounds the importance of kinship and support from extended family as well as both the responsibilities migratory family members feel and the experience of loss by those left behind. Across the diverse circumstances explored in the book are similarities in migrants’ strategies for keeping in touch, but also large differences in relation to access to ICTs and ease-of-use that highlight the digital divide and generational gaps. As elsewhere in the world, and in spite of the varied experiences in these kinship circles, the phenomenon that is the transnational family is showing no signs of receding. This book provides a groundbreaking contribution to global debates on migration from the Global South.

Sixty years on from the signing of the Refugee Convention, forced migration and refugee movements continue to raise global concerns for hosting states and regions, for countries of origin, for humanitarian organisations on the ground, and, of course, for the refugee. This edited volume is framed around two themes which go to the core of contemporary ‘refugeehood’: protection and identity. It analyses how the issue of refugee identity is shaped by and responds to the legal regime of refugee protection in contemporary times. The book investigates the premise that there is a narrowing of protection space in many countries and many highly visible incidents of refoulement. It argues that ‘Protection’, which is a core focus of the Refugee Convention, appears to be under threat, as there are many gaps and inconsistencies in practice. Contributors to the volume, who include Erika Feller, Elspeth Guild, Hélène Lambert and Roger Zetter, look at the relevant issues from the perspective of a number of different disciplines including law, politics, sociology, and anthropology. The chapters examine the link between identity and protection as a basis for understanding how the Refugee Convention has been and is being applied in policy and practice. From Paesani to Global Italians is a study of the migration history and experiences of migrants from the Veneto region in the northeast of Italy. Veneto, which includes the province of Venice, is today one of the most affluent regions in Italy. Migration from the Veneto to Australia began in the late 1800s, although the bulk of the migrants arrived immediately after the Second World War. Most northern Italian migrants to Australia come from this region. The authors explore the contribution made by this group of migrants to their new homeland, their settlement experiences, and their continuing connections with their ancestral homes. The authors also touch on the future of ethnic groups and the crisis in aged care for people of non-English speaking backgrounds. The text is enlivened by life histories, character portraits, and quotations.
