Wordplay involving several linguistic codes is an important modality of ludic language. This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the topic, discussing examples from different epochs, genres, and communicative situations. Since its founding in 1943, Medievalia et Humanistica has won worldwide recognition as the first scholarly publication in America to devote itself entirely to medieval and Renaissance studies. Since 1970, a new series, sponsored by the Modern Language Association of America and edited by an international board of distinguished scholars and critics, has published interdisciplinary articles. In yearly hardcover volumes, the new series publishes significant scholarship, criticism, and reviews treating all facets of medieval and Renaissance culture: history, art, literature, music, science, law, economics, and philosophy. Volume 47 showcases a variety of transnational and translingual perspectives, analyzing the works of humanist authors from across Europe, and how language can affect the interpretation of the literature. It expands beyond the Eurocentric appraisal of medieval works and takes into consideration a broader response.

Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene (1590; 1596) is an epic romance teeming with dragons, fantastic animals, giants, grotesque human-animal composites, monstrous humans and other creatures. This monograph is the first ever book-length account of Spenser's monsters and their relation to the poetic imagination in the Renaissance. It provides readers with an extended discussion of the role monstrous beings play in Spenser's epic romance, and how they are related to the Renaissance notions of the imagination and poetic creation. This book first offers a taxonomic inventory of the monstrous beings in The Faerie Queene, which analyses them along systematic and anatomical parameters. It then reads monsters and monstrous beings as signs interacting with the early modern discourse on the autonomous poet, who creates a secondary nature through the use of his transformative imagination and fashions monsters as ciphers that need to be interpreted by the reader.

Volume 45 showcases the interdisciplinary nature of the series with articles on the ambiguity of Charlemagne in Late Medieval German literature, a Christian epic in favor of the Muslim sultan Mehmet II, theory and practice of literary supplementation in the case of Catullus’s carmen 51, and ekphrasis as a stylistic device in medieval poetics. Volume 45 also includes one review article and seven review notices that reflect the journal’s interdisciplinary scope. This volume focuses especially on the reception of Islam in Europe during the Middle Ages and in early modern times.

Wordplay involving several linguistic codes represents an important modality of ludic language. It is attested in different epochs, communicative situations, genres, and contexts of use. The translation of wordplay, which is generally seen as a challenging enterprise, illustrates another dimension of crossing linguistic borders in wordplay. The third volume of the series The Dynamics of Wordplay unites contributions from different disciplines which study the creative and playful use of elements from different languages and the transfer of ludic language into other linguistic systems. It sheds light on the multi-dimensionality, special linguistic make-up, and specific interactive potential of wordplay at the interface of different languages and cultures. The individual studies collected in this volume will be of interest to scholars from different scientific fields, such as linguistics and literary studies as well as cultural and media studies.

Volume 44 showcases the interdisciplinary nature of the series with articles on the role of women in Old English martyrology, the blending of sacred and mundane subjects in medieval biblical plays (Spiele), the relationship between reality and literary topoi in the humanist praise of cities (Städtelob), and reflections on the absence of the bull in early modern European discourse. Volume 44 also includes five review notices that illustrate the journal’s interdisciplinary scope.
