¿Pertenece la historia de al-Andalus a la historia de España? ¿Qué relaciones cabe establecer entre ellas? Una fuerte corriente historiográfica puso el acento, en el siglo XX, en la hispanización de al-Andalus, convertido así en «España musulmana» y habitado por españoles que, por azares de la historia, eran musulmanes. En tiempos más recientes, esa tradición, de marcado carácter esencialista, se ha visto superada por interpretaciones que sitúan a al-Andalus en un contexto más definido por elementos magrebíes y orientales que por los propiamente hispánicos. En este libro se plantea una revisión de la historiografía española, francesa y portuguesa sobre la historia de al-Andalus, desde una mirada crítica que abarca otros temas igualmente centrales para la comprensión de un fenómeno histórico que ha generado y continúa generando polémica. En torno a la reivindicación o la repulsa de lo andalusí se han creado paradigmas culturales de gran potencia, se han marcado líneas divisorias y áreas de contacto o de conflicto. Todo ello no puede eliminarse de un plumazo, o contemplarse con una mirada desdeñosa: forma parte de un pasado que todavía hoy solivianta a muchos, mientras que atrae a otros, lo que quiere decir que su actualidad sigue vigente.
