The Nordic countries have played a key role in shipping for over a century, but have had to contend with declining employment and loss of markets over the last fifty years. Globalization has led to a series of new challenges and opportunities in the maritime industries - both the rules of the game and the playing field have changed. This book analyzes how shipping companies and authorities in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland have adapted to these changes. It explains why important parts of Nordic shipping failed to respond effectively to the economic integration process, while other parts were able to exploit the global growth opportunities. By linking company strategies to changes in political and institutional frameworks, this book maps out the transformation of an entire industry.

This book addresses the evolution of the strategies, structures, ownership patterns and performances of large European corporations since the early 1960s. The authors study large and small countries, in order to understand how the process of economic integration has affected the patterns of growth and the structural characteristics of the largest firms. Drawing both on extensive databases and on case studies, the contributions in this volume address the peculiar specificities of large firms in different national contexts, adopting a longitudinal, long term perspective. This volume delivers the first results of an international, collective research effort undertaken by several national teams. The 'Mapping Corporate Europe' project aims to provide a detailed account of the structural traits of the European Corporation in a framework which includes (i) a chronological analysis over 50 years, starting with the Rome treaty in 1957; (ii) geographical extension beyond previous analyses for France, Germany and the UK, by including smaller countries; (iii) firms from other industries in addition to manufacturing companies; and (iv) attention to internationalisation of European firms. These analyses form the basis of a rich description of the developments of large European corporations over the past five decades, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. This book was originally published as a special issue of Business History.

Carsten Dencker Nielsens karriere begynder i det succesfulde, verdensomspændende ØK i 1950’erne. 40 år senere bliver han virksomhedens sidste administrerende direktør i Danmark. Gennem sit arbejdsliv er Carsten Dencker Nielsen udstationeret i Kenya, Nigeria, Indonesien, Japan og Bangkok – indtil han omkring årtusindskiftet må se det hæderkronede ØK falde fra hinanden. Siden går han over til et aktivt arbejde for samhandel og kulturel forståelse mellem Asien og Danmark, helt frem til sin død i 2019. Bogen er ikke blot et portræt af en usædvanlig mønsterbryder og erhvervsmand, den er også et portræt af de lande og de økonomier, som Dencker Nielsen opholdt sig i – naturligvis med udgangspunkt i ØK og dermed også dansk erhvervsliv. Vi kommer tæt på samfundsudviklingen i Afrika og Asien og får indblik i de moderniseringsinitiativer, som blev taget i udviklingslandene i efterkrigstiden, initiativer som i vidt omfang led tilbageslag på grund af dårlig regeringsførelse. Kompagniets mand giver desuden et indblik i den særlige kultur, der herskede i en stor dansk virksomhed som ØK. Arbejdspladsen var præget af et stramt hierarki og for nutidens øjne en hård ledelse. Men ØK var også en virksomhed, der gav unge talenter som Carsten Dencker Nielsen mulighed for at gøre internationale karriere og få eventyrlige oplevelser i det fremmede.
