Die Narratologie als Zweig der Literaturwissenschaft, der sich mit Erzhlungen und ihren Verfahren beschftigt, hat in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten einen Boom erlebt. Anhand der neueren und neuesten Literatur wurde ein differenziertes Instrumentarium zur Beschreibung narrativer Verfahren und Formen entwickelt. Aus medivistischer Sicht stellt sich die Frage, ob und wie dieses Instrumentarium auch auf ltere Texte zu bertragen ist. Der vorliegende Band erprobt dies zum ersten Mal insbesondere an der lteren deutschen Literatur.

While the natural world plays a profound role in Meyer's work, he achieves in its depiction a synthesis between the representational and the abstract. Both mysterious and revealing, the water's surface reflects its surroundings while simultaneously drawing the viewer's attention into the depths beneath. Organic forms converge to form a dynamic ecosystem, nature's cycle of life, death, and regeneration. Meyer's objective is to transform these elements, dissolving the imagery into layers of light and color.

The term 'literary lives' defines the specific focus on the question of role designs that runs throughout this volume. The focus is on literature, albeit in a broadly conceived sense of the term. The 'role designs' in the sub-title refer first of all to the plurality of different 'careers' that individuals may traverse in the course of their lives, and secondly to the exemplary nature of these literary designs. The articles centre largely on the 13th century, the earliest period in which we encounter a wide-ranging spectrum of roles in all literatures. The extension of the focus back to the late 12th century and forward to the late Middle Ages is intended to give an additional perspective to the central issue the volume inquires into.
