The Bible is full of poems. It includes the Psalms and the Song of Songs of course, but poetry plays an immense part in the prophets and shows up in the historical books of the Old Testament. The New Testament, for its part, reverberates with allusions to the poetry of the Old and concludes with Revelations, a visionary poem, while Jesus, seeking to open his listener's eyes to the kingdom of heaven, describes it with the poetic epithet of “a treasure hid in a field,” while the son of God is the “true vine,” “the light of the world,” “the good shepherd,” “the way, the truth, and the life.” The Bible, in other words, asks to be read poetically throughout, and yet readers have rarely considered the implications of that, much less heeded its call. In Bible and Poetry, the poet and scholar Michael Edwards seeks to transform how the Bible and Christianity are understood, arguing that poetry is not an ornamental or accidental feature of the Bible, but central to its meaning. The creative use of words that is poetry is the necessary medium of the Creator's word, and belief emerges not from precepts and propositions, but out of the lived experience—this is what the Bible offers above all—of the power of that word.

Seated at a table in the celebrated Brasserie Lipp, the author experiences 'this in- / fernal ticking in the ink' and finds memory coming alive, recovering past moments as intensely present, spots of time which vivify him and his past. Through memory and poetry he experiences revelation of a Christian depth. England is a familiar yet now a foreign country, the author having written for years in French. 'English becomes / a strange tongue echoing readily with names / gainrising with the new-born world they name.' Distinct recollections open into one another, restored and changed in language. Music and painting, too, are evoked as windows on this world. The book includes ninety poems organised into thirty sections, each with three poems which are free-standing yet connected, speaking together. His English takes its bearings from the stress patterns of Anglo Saxon prosody. Not only the poet but his language itself returns to its beginnings.

The Heroides, or Letters of Heroines, is a collection of twenty-one fictional letters composed by the famous Augustan poet Ovid (43 BC-AD 17/18). It is a widely read work of elegiac poetry which is of special interest to students of gender literature. The poems, which take the form of fifteen letters from heroines to their absent lovers and three pairs of letters to a lover with a reply, have frequently been edited and translated into English in both prose and verse. What is the meaning of literature and of language in a Christian perspective? Why do they exist? More particularly, what can we learn about writing if it occurs in a world excluded from Eden?
