(Book). "I was six or seven when I noticed the music in my head. It was there in the classroom, on the football pitch, at the dinner table, when I went to sleep and when I woke up. And it's continued ever since." As a teenager in Scotland, Mike Scott played in punk and garage bands, hitchhiked to see Bob Dylan play, and scammed his way into Patti Smith's inner circle during an eye-opening weekend in London. In 1983 he formed The Waterboys with an ever-rotating cast of collaborators including The Fellow Who Fiddles (Steve Wickham) and The Human Saxophone (Anthony Thistlethwaite) and soon found international success with the "big music" sound of songs like "Don't Bang the Drum" and "The Whole of the Moon". In 1986 Scott travelled to Ireland to spend a week with Wickham and ended up staying for six years. During that time he developed a deep interest in roots and folk music, resulting in The Waterboys' best-selling album, Fisherman's Blues . After scaling the heights of success and moving the band to New York, he followed another fascination and went to live in the Findhorn spiritual community in Northern Scotland. Adventures of a Waterboy is an evocative, eye-opening memoir by one of the great British songwriters of the past four decades. It is an honest and revealing work, by turns heartfelt and funny, that tells the story of a cocky Scot with a sound in his head and his lifelong efforts to reproduce that sound a story that runs from teenage fandom to international stardom, from Scotland to New York City and beyond.

It is increasingly clear that, in order to understand language as a phenomenon, we must understand the phenomenon of text. Our primary experience of language comes in the form of texts, which embody the complete communicative events through which our language-using lives are lived. These events are shaped by communicative needs, and this shaping is reflected in certain characteristic patterns in the texts. However, the nature of texts and text is still elusive: we know which forms are typically found in text but we do not yet have a full grasp of how they constitute its textuality, how they make a text “tick”. The twelve contributions to this volume show how texts across a wide range of text types hold together by different patterns of chunking and linking. The common purpose in all the contributions is to explore the nature of text patterning as the functional environment within which language operates.

Textual Patterns introduces corpus resources, tools and analytic frameworks of central relevance to language teachers and teacher educators. Specifically it shows how key word analysis, combined with the systematic study of vocabulary and genre, can form the basis for a corpus informed approach to language teaching. The first part of the book gives the reader a strong grounding in the way in which language teachers can use corpus analysis tools (wordlists, concordances, key words) to describe language patterns in general and text patterns in particular. The second section presents a series of case studies which show how a key word / corpus informed approach to language education can work in practice. The case studies include: General language education (i.e. students in national education systems and those following international examination programmes), foreign languages for academic purposes, literature in language education, business and professional communication, and cultural studies in language education.

Oil Bandits is a quirky action adventure story with Romantic Comedy overtones. Today is Monday. Bud Warner and his twin brother Clay are young Houston oil tycoon heirs. They are to be married in a double wedding ceremony on Saturday. Their fiancés, Sidney Fleming and Gina Rodriguez, are two very gorgeous, successful business ladies. The wedding is to be presided over by their friend, Reverend Jesse Jackson. Jesse and the boys get sidetracked and go to Indonesia for some business. After completing the business, they try to head home and get framed in a sting. Two Warner oil tankers off the coast of Yemen are destroyed, and six other tankers are hijacked. Their friends counter with a sting, which obtains their release. In another twist, they are kidnapped and placed in a position of compromise with Al Quada, where they meet Osama bin Ladin. After some Chiropractic manipulation and a miracle, Osama befriends the three Americans and releases the six tankers in the U.S. While trekking down the Afghan mountains, United States and Afghan friendly forces capture the three Americans and threaten prosecution for treason. All ends well with a beautiful double wedding.
